Celsius-Born Ionic Digital Debuts on Nasdaq, Pivots to AI Infrastructure
The Bitcoin mining spinout from the bankrupt lender began trading under ticker IOND, offering creditors a path to recovery while joining the industry's AI shift.
Ionic Digital, the Bitcoin mining and AI infrastructure company carved out of the bankrupt Celsius Network, began trading on Nasdaq July 28 under the ticker IOND. The direct listing marks a milestone for Celsius creditors, who received approximately 37 million Class A shares in Ionic as part of the bankruptcy restructuring plan.
From Bankruptcy to Public Markets
Ionic emerged from the seized mining assets of Celsius Network, which collapsed in 2022 amid the crypto lending crisis. The entity was designed specifically to recover value for creditors through the monetization of former Celsius mining infrastructure. As part of the bankruptcy plan, those creditors now hold equity in the newly public company.
The stock reached approximately $63 on its first day of trading, according to market data. Based on the $53 reference price and institutional investment, Ionic's implied market capitalization stands at roughly $2.4 billion.
The AI Pivot
Ionic's debut arrives as Bitcoin mining companies increasingly diversify beyond cryptocurrency extraction. The company is pivoting its business model from pure Bitcoin mining toward AI infrastructure and data center leasing, a strategy aimed at mitigating exposure to Bitcoin's price volatility and the impact of halving events.
This shift mirrors moves by competitors such as Hut 8, which has also expanded into AI hosting services. Mining firms possess substantial power infrastructure and cooling systems that can be repurposed for AI workloads, creating more stable revenue streams than mining alone.
Why It Matters
The successful listing represents a concrete realization of value for creditors involved in one of crypto's most prominent bankruptcy proceedings. Celsius Network's collapse left thousands of customers unable to access their funds, and Ionic provides one avenue for partial recovery.
Beyond the creditor implications, Ionic's market debut underscores a broader industry transformation. As Bitcoin mining margins face pressure from network difficulty adjustments and halving cycles, companies with existing infrastructure are finding new monetization paths in the booming AI sector. The $2.4 billion valuation suggests investors are pricing in this diversification strategy.
Ionic's transition from bankruptcy vehicle to public company also signals growing institutional appetite for crypto-adjacent infrastructure plays, particularly those with revenue models less tethered to cryptocurrency prices.
