Chainlink and Bottomline Connect 600+ Banks to Blockchain Settlement

The integration enables financial institutions to route cross-border payments via blockchain without replacing legacy ISO 20022 messaging standards.

Chainlink has entered into a strategic partnership with Bottomline to bridge traditional banking infrastructure with blockchain settlement systems. The collaboration enables a vast network of financial institutions to interact with on-chain environments while maintaining their existing operational frameworks.

Bottomline, a top-three SWIFT services provider, processes more than $16 trillion in annual payment transactions. Through this integration, Bottomline's network of over 600 banks and 1,200 financial institutions can now connect to blockchain settlement infrastructure. This allows these entities to route cross-border and cross-chain payments by leveraging Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), ensuring that institutions do not have to replace their current ISO 20022 messaging standards to access blockchain capabilities.

The Legacy Bridge

Traditional international banking relies heavily on the SWIFT network and the ISO 20022 standard for messaging. While these systems provide a global language for financial data, they often operate in silos from the emerging blockchain ecosystem. Chainlink's CCIP and CRE infrastructure act as a translation layer, converting these standard banking messages into blockchain transactions. This allows legacy financial systems to interact with both public and private blockchains without requiring a complete and costly infrastructure overhaul.

Institutional Implications

This partnership creates a direct conduit between the $16 trillion in payment volume handled by Bottomline and the blockchain ecosystem. By removing the technical barrier of replacing established messaging systems, Chainlink significantly lowers the entry threshold for institutional adoption of on-chain settlement. The ability to maintain existing workflows while gaining the efficiency of blockchain could accelerate the industry's transition toward real-time, cross-border payments and reduce the friction typically associated with traditional settlement cycles.

Future Outlook

As more financial institutions integrate CCIP via providers like Bottomline, the focus will likely shift toward the volume of actual value migrating from legacy rails to on-chain settlement. While the infrastructure is now in place for over 1,800 combined banks and financial institutions, the pace of adoption will depend on the regulatory environment and the willingness of these institutions to move live payment flows onto blockchain networks.
