Circle Launches cirBTC to Bridge Institutional Bitcoin into Ethereum DeFi
The new 1:1 Bitcoin-backed token combines OCC-regulated custody with Chainlink Proof of Reserve to reduce counterparty risk.
Circle has launched cirBTC, a Bitcoin-backed token on the Ethereum network designed to integrate native BTC into decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. The asset allows institutional users to utilize Bitcoin as collateral or for trading within smart contracts while maintaining a 1:1 peg to the underlying cryptocurrency.
To ensure stability and transparency, cirBTC is backed 1:1 by native Bitcoin and is redeemable 1:1 for the original asset. The underlying BTC is held by Circle International Bermuda Limited and custodied by Circle National Trust. As a federally chartered national trust bank, Circle National Trust operates under the supervision of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). To provide continuous, independent verification of these reserves, Circle integrated Chainlink Proof of Reserve, which publishes reserve data on-chain for real-time monitoring.
The Wrapped Asset Challenge
Native Bitcoin operates on its own blockchain and cannot interact directly with the programmable smart contracts found on networks like Ethereum. To solve this, the industry uses "wrapped" assets, where native BTC is locked in custody and a representative token is issued on a different chain. While this enables utility, it creates a significant trust gap; users must typically rely on the issuer's internal claims or periodic third-party audits to verify that the reserves actually exist.
Institutional Implications
This trust gap has historically acted as a barrier for institutional investors, who require higher standards of transparency and regulatory oversight before committing capital to synthetic assets. By pairing a regulated national trust bank with a decentralized oracle for real-time attestation, Circle is attempting to build a neutral infrastructure that removes the reliance on manual audits. This shift could accelerate the adoption of Bitcoin as a primary collateral asset in institutional DeFi, providing a more secure bridge for the synthetic BTC market, which is currently valued between $12.5 billion and $13.5 billion.
Future Expansion
While cirBTC is currently live on the Ethereum network, Circle has indicated that the asset will expand its reach. The company plans to introduce native support for cirBTC on the Arc blockchain following its mainnet launch, further extending the utility of the wrapped asset across different network environments. This expansion aims to diversify the liquidity pools available to institutional holders, allowing them to move Bitcoin-backed value across multiple ecosystems without sacrificing the regulatory protections provided by the OCC-supervised custody model.
