Coinbase's Base Pivots to AI Agent Economy with New Financial Infrastructure
The Layer 2 network is shifting focus from social apps to autonomous agentic finance, leveraging its x402 payment standard.
Coinbase's Layer 2 network, Base, is aggressively pivoting its strategic focus toward the AI agent economy. The network is prioritizing the development of financial infrastructure for autonomous agents, trading, and payments over its previous emphasis on consumer social applications.
This shift is centered on the launch of AiFi, a dedicated financial infrastructure suite designed for the AI agent economy. To support this ecosystem, Coinbase has introduced "Agentic Wallets," which enable AI agents to hold funds, execute trades, and transact on-chain without requiring human intervention. According to Base founder Jesse Pollak, this represents a clear move away from the network's earlier push into social applications in favor of autonomous financial tools.
The Rise of Agentic Finance
The transition comes as Coinbase sees significant traction with its x402 payment standard, a protocol that allows businesses to accept payments directly from AI bots. The x402 standard has already processed more than $100 million in transactions. The scale of this activity is heavily concentrated on the Base network, which currently hosts approximately 90% of all on-chain agentic stablecoin volume.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has positioned the network as a primary hub for this activity, stating that Base is the "best chain for trading, payments, and AI agents."
Why the Pivot Matters
This strategic realignment signals a bet that the next major wave of blockchain activity will be driven by autonomous software rather than human users. By standardizing how AI agents handle money and interact with financial services, Coinbase is attempting to build the foundational layer for a new "agent economy."
If successful, this infrastructure could automate complex financial workflows—such as portfolio rebalancing or B2B payments—at a scale and speed impossible for human operators. By integrating these capabilities directly into a Layer 2 environment, Base aims to reduce the friction associated with on-chain transactions for non-human entities.
What's Next
Industry observers are now watching how the AiFi ecosystem expands and whether other Layer 2 networks will develop competing standards for agentic finance. While the network has already secured a dominant share of agentic stablecoin volume, the long-term success of the pivot depends on the adoption of Agentic Wallets by a broader range of AI developers. The focus now shifts to whether these autonomous agents can move beyond simple payments into more complex, self-sustaining financial strategies on the Base network.
