Crypto Majors Rally in September but Remain Negative Year-to-Date

Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana post double-digit monthly gains as investors weigh institutional inflows against regulatory hurdles.

Major cryptocurrencies staged a significant recovery in early September, with Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana all posting double-digit gains over a 30-day period ending September 7, 2026. The rally marks a sharp short-term reversal for a market that has struggled throughout the year.

According to data reported by 24/7 Wall St., XRP led the surge with a 36.09% gain, closely followed by Solana at 36.02%. Ethereum rose 29.78%, while Bitcoin saw a more modest increase of 20.98%. Despite this momentum, the rally has not been enough to erase annual losses. Year-to-date performance remains negative across the board: Bitcoin is down 10.25%, Ethereum has fallen 16.21%, Solana is down 17.00%, and XRP has dropped 23.13%.

The Institutional and Network Divide

The sustainability of these gains varies by asset, with Bitcoin relying heavily on institutional support. Cumulative net inflows into Bitcoin spot ETFs have reached approximately $55.62 billion, providing a foundational layer of stability that differs from the more volatile altcoin market.

Ethereum, meanwhile, faces internal competition. Standard Chartered estimated that the Base network has diverted $50 billion in market capitalization from Ethereum's mainnet through transaction fees, suggesting that the growth of Layer-2 solutions may be cannibalizing the primary network's value even during a broader market recovery.

Regulatory and Macro Risks

For XRP, the current recovery is inextricably linked to legislative developments in the United States. The asset's trajectory depends largely on the CLARITY Act, which faces a critical cloture vote scheduled for September 15, 2026. However, the outlook is cautious; Galaxy Research has cut the probability of the CLARITY Act becoming law in 2026 to just 10%.

This regulatory uncertainty, combined with upcoming macroeconomic triggers—including Federal Reserve meetings on September 16—creates a precarious environment. The disparity between Bitcoin's ETF-driven stability and the binary outcomes facing XRP and Solana highlights a fragmented recovery. While Bitcoin serves as the industry benchmark, altcoins remain highly sensitive to specific legal milestones and technical execution.

Market Outlook

Analysts are now monitoring whether this rally represents a genuine shift toward a new bullish phase or a "dead cat bounce" before further declines. The coming weeks will be decisive, as the market reacts to the Senate's vote on the CLARITY Act and the Federal Reserve's latest policy signals. Investors are watching to see if institutional inflows can offset the systemic risks that have kept the major assets in the red for the majority of 2026.
