Crypto Markets Rally as Trump Urges Passage of CLARITY Act

Bitcoin, Ether, and XRP surge following a White House summit and U.S. Treasury bond buybacks.

Major digital assets surged Thursday after President Donald Trump urged Congress to pass a fair version of the CLARITY Act during a White House gathering on August 19, 2026. The move signals a potential shift toward a formal legal framework for digital asset innovation, triggering a broad market rally.

In early Thursday trading, Bitcoin rose 5.2% to approximately $71,880, while Ether climbed more than 9% to reach $2,288.91. XRP saw particularly sharp gains, climbing nearly 10% to roughly $1.09. This momentum followed a spike in institutional interest; spot XRP ETFs recorded $5.81 million in inflows on August 18, marking their strongest single-day performance since July 31.

The Regulatory Pivot

The rally follows a period of intense volatility and skepticism. As recently as August 15, market sentiment had soured, with reports suggesting the odds of the CLARITY Act passing had collapsed to just 10%. The current reversal comes after a high-level summit involving SEC Chair Paul Atkins, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, and Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse. During the discussions, Garlinghouse emphasized the industry's legitimacy, stating that "crypto isn’t a fringe industry."

Macroeconomic Tailwinds

While political endorsement provided the spark, macroeconomic conditions provided the fuel. The rally was amplified by U.S. Treasury bond buybacks, which effectively lowered long-term yields. This shift in the bond market reduced the relative attractiveness of safe-haven assets, increasing the appeal of high-risk assets like cryptocurrencies. The convergence of a supportive political narrative and increased liquidity created a fertile environment for the sudden price acceleration across the top three coins.

The Road to September

Industry analysts view the current surge as a bet on institutionalization. If the CLARITY Act passes, it could provide the regulatory certainty required for larger financial institutions to integrate digital assets into their core offerings. However, the market remains sensitive to political rhetoric, and the current gains are heavily tied to the expectation of legislative success.

Investors are now looking toward September 15, 2026, when a scheduled vote for the CLARITY Act is set to take place. This vote will serve as the definitive test of whether the current rally is supported by fundamental legal shifts or is merely a reaction to temporary political sentiment.
