Cryptocurrency security has shifted from the digital realm to the physical world as "wrench attacks"—the use of violence and coercion to steal private keys—reach record levels in 2026. This trend marks a dangerous evolution in cybercrime, where attackers are bypassing encryption not with code, but with physical force.

According to the Intel3D H1 2026 Wrench Attacks Report from blockchain security firm CertiK, 52 global incidents were verified in the first half of the year alone. These attacks resulted in a recorded financial exposure of $124.1 million. The data reveals a stark geographic concentration, with France serving as the primary global hotspot; CertiK reported that 33 of the 52 verified incidents occurred in France, accounting for approximately 63.5% of the global total.

A Pattern of Escalation

The surge in France is corroborated by government data. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported 77 crypto-related cases involving kidnappings and extortion in the first half of 2026. This figure is particularly alarming as it already surpasses the total number of such cases recorded for the entirety of 2025.

This escalation follows a growing trend of targeting high-net-worth individuals and industry executives. A pivotal moment occurred in 2025 with the high-profile kidnapping of Ledger co-founder David Balland, an event that signaled a shift toward targeting the architects of the crypto ecosystem and their families. While digital hacks once dominated the threat landscape, the visibility of crypto wealth and the availability of personal data have made physical targets more viable for organized crime.

The Failure of Technical Safeguards

The rise of these attacks exposes a critical vulnerability in current security paradigms. For years, the industry has emphasized hardware wallets and complex seed phrases as the gold standard for protection. However, these technical safeguards are entirely ineffective against physical coercion. When a victim is facing a home invasion or kidnapping, the most secure encryption in the world cannot prevent the disclosure of a password.

As a result, the industry is being forced to pivot toward "coercion-resistant" custody solutions. Experts are now advocating for the adoption of multi-signature (multi-sig) wallets and distributed signing processes. By requiring multiple independent parties to authorize a transaction, these systems ensure that no single individual can be coerced into draining a wallet, effectively removing the "single point of failure" that a physical attacker can exploit.

Future Outlook

As the year progresses, the industry must determine if this spike is a temporary trend or a permanent shift in criminal strategy. While the CertiK data provides a baseline for the first half of 2026, the full scale of the year's losses remains to be seen. The primary focus for users and firms moving forward will be the transition from individual seed-phrase reliance to institutional-grade, distributed security architectures to mitigate the risk of physical violence.
