CZ Predicts Bitcoin Will Overtake Gold in Next Bull Run

Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao believes Bitcoin is poised to surpass gold in total market value during the next bull cycle. Speaking at the Bitcoin Asia 2026 conference in Hong Kong on August 27, Zhao argued that the transition to a digital reserve standard is accelerating.

During a session titled "The Bitcoin Century," Zhao stated that Bitcoin is a superior asset to gold due to its fixed supply, digital nature, and ease of transferability. He noted that the timeline for this transition is being compressed by the rapid adoption of Bitcoin by nation-states and institutional investors. At the time of his remarks, Bitcoin was trading near $79,700 with a market capitalization of approximately $1.6 trillion, while gold was priced above $4,600 per ounce. Despite this momentum, the market cap gap between the two assets remains significant, currently sitting at approximately 10x.

The Shift to Digital Reserves

This prediction arrives as global financial markets grapple with increasing government debt and currency debasement, driving a broader trend toward scarce assets. The rise of spot ETFs has already provided a regulated pipeline for institutional capital to enter the crypto market. Zhao suggests that this institutionalization is a precursor to a larger shift in how governments manage their wealth.

To facilitate this, Zhao recommended that governments establishing strategic cryptocurrency reserves adopt a market-cap weighted allocation. His proposed framework suggests a portfolio consisting of over 50% Bitcoin, 10% to 20% Ethereum, and the remaining balance distributed among other top-tier cryptocurrencies.

Implications for Global Finance

If Bitcoin were to overtake gold, it would represent a fundamental restructuring of the global financial architecture. Moving from a physical reserve standard to a digital one would validate the "digital gold" thesis, potentially triggering a massive repricing of the asset. Such a shift could add tens of trillions of dollars to Bitcoin's market capitalization as it absorbs the role of the primary global store of value.

While Zhao is confident in the trajectory, the 10x valuation gap remains a steep climb. Investors and analysts are now watching for further nation-state adoption of strategic reserves to see if the theoretical framework Zhao proposed is adopted in practice. Whether this transition occurs in the next cycle or over a longer horizon depends largely on the pace of government integration and the continued stability of the digital asset ecosystem.
