Derive Integrates Flare's FXRP for On-Chain XRP Options Trading

XRP holders can now use FXRP as collateral for decentralized derivatives, reducing reliance on centralized exchanges.

XRP holders can now trade options and perpetual futures on-chain through the integration of Flare Network's FXRP on the decentralized derivatives platform Derive. This integration allows users to engage in professional-grade hedging and speculation without depositing their assets into a centralized exchange.

To access these tools, users mint FXRP—a trustless, 1:1 over-collateralized wrapped version of XRP created via Flare's FAssets protocol—and deposit it into a Derive Portfolio Margin V2 account. Once deposited, FXRP serves as the collateral for both XRP options and perpetual futures. While FXRP secures the positions, the platform settles options in USDC, meaning profitable trades pay out in the stablecoin while the original FXRP remains as collateral.

Bridging the DeFi Gap

This integration addresses a long-standing limitation of the XRP Ledger, which lacks native smart-contract functionality. Because the base ledger cannot support complex decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, XRP has historically had limited utility outside of simple transfers and centralized trading venues.

Flare's FAssets system bridges this gap by creating programmable representations of non-smart-contract assets, including XRP, Bitcoin, and Dogecoin. By bringing these assets onto the Flare blockchain, they can interact with sophisticated DeFi protocols like Derive, effectively unlocking the utility of the tokens in a decentralized environment.

The Rise of 'XRPFi'

The ability to trade derivatives non-custodially marks a significant expansion of what is being termed "XRPFi." For the first time, XRP holders have access to institutional-grade financial strategies, such as premium generation and risk hedging, while maintaining self-custody of their private keys.

According to Nick Forster, founder and CEO of Derive, options are often the last major market to develop around a specific asset. By providing these tools, the integration increases the overall liquidity and utility of XRP within the broader DeFi ecosystem and reduces the systemic risk associated with relying on centralized exchanges for derivatives.

Expanding Ecosystem Utility

Beyond derivatives trading, FXRP is rapidly becoming a versatile tool within the DeFi landscape. It was recently approved as collateral for Sentora's RLUSD lending vault on Morpho, a move that allows users to borrow RLUSD against their FXRP holdings.

Market participants will now be watching to see if other major non-smart-contract assets follow the FXRP model to gain similar DeFi capabilities. As more protocols integrate FAssets, the boundary between legacy payment tokens and programmable DeFi assets continues to blur.
