Ericsson Scales MTN MoMo Fintech Infrastructure Across Africa
The partnership leverages the Ericsson Wallet Platform to modernize mobile money services in multiple key African markets.
Ericsson and MTN Group Fintech have entered a strategic partnership to enhance mobile financial services across Africa. The collaboration aims to modernize the digital payment landscape by upgrading the underlying infrastructure of MTN's fintech ecosystem.
At the center of this upgrade is the Ericsson Wallet Platform, which now powers MTN's MoMo (Mobile Money) services. This technical migration, referred to as 'MoMo Evolved,' has already been completed in several markets, including Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, and Eswatini. These deployments transition the service to a more scalable architecture designed to handle higher transaction volumes and more complex financial products.
The Push for Digital Finance
MTN is one of Africa's largest telecommunications providers and has pivoted aggressively toward fintech to diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional voice and data. By integrating Ericsson's software infrastructure, MTN is moving away from legacy systems toward a cloud-native approach. This shift is part of a broader trend among African telcos to transform into "super-apps" that offer everything from micro-loans to insurance and merchant payments within a single interface.
Impact on Financial Inclusion
The modernization of fintech infrastructure for a provider of MTN's scale has significant implications for financial inclusion. In many of the markets where MoMo Evolved is being deployed, a large portion of the population remains unbanked or underbanked. By increasing the efficiency and reliability of digital payments, the upgrade reduces the friction of moving money and lowers the barrier to entry for formal financial services. For the industry, this sets a benchmark for how network infrastructure providers and mobile operators can collaborate to build stable, high-capacity financial rails in emerging markets.
Expansion Roadmap
While several countries have already migrated, the transformation is ongoing. Projects are currently underway in Cameroon to bring its services up to the new standard. Furthermore, MTN and Ericsson are in discussions to extend these fintech upgrades to Benin, Zambia, and the Republic of the Congo. The success of these remaining rollouts will determine how quickly MTN can unify its fintech experience across its entire African footprint.
