Ether.fi pivots to 'crypto banking' with DeFi-native financial tools

The Ethereum staking platform is expanding its ecosystem to challenge traditional retail banks through self-custodial credit and lending.

Ethereum staking platform Ether.fi is expanding its service offering to position itself as a decentralized alternative to traditional banking. The move signals a strategic shift from a specialized staking provider to a comprehensive "DeFi bank" designed to provide retail users with institutional-grade financial tools.

As part of this expansion, the platform has introduced a credit card that allows users to borrow against their crypto collateral. This card includes a 3% cash-back incentive, bridging the gap between decentralized finance (DeFi) and everyday consumer spending. By integrating these features, Ether.fi aims to create a seamless loop where digital assets serve as the primary engine for credit and liquidity.

The shift to decentralized banking

Ether.fi has primarily operated as a liquid staking protocol, allowing users to earn rewards on their Ethereum while maintaining liquidity. However, the current pivot into "crypto banking" reflects a broader industry trend toward integrating traditional financial utilities into self-custodial environments. This evolution allows users to manage their wealth without relinquishing control of their private keys to a centralized intermediary.

Why it matters

This transition represents a significant challenge to the utility of traditional retail banks. By allowing users to access credit based on their digital holdings, Ether.fi is attempting to lower the barrier to entry for non-DeFi users who may be hesitant to sell their assets to realize liquidity. The ability to leverage a portfolio for spending—while maintaining ownership of the underlying assets—mimics the private banking services typically reserved for high-net-worth individuals.

Mike Silagadze, founder and CEO of Ether.fi, stated that the goal is to replace traditional banks for most users. According to Silagadze, the platform intends to provide tools and benefits that were previously available only to institutions and wealthy individuals, effectively democratizing access to sophisticated financial strategies.

What's next

As Ether.fi continues to build out its DeFi-native banking suite, the industry will be watching how the platform manages the regulatory complexities associated with credit and fiat-adjacent services. While the core narrative of a decentralized bank is now established, the long-term success of the model will depend on user adoption of the credit card and the platform's ability to maintain security while scaling its lending capabilities.
