Ethereum ETFs Gain $196.9M as Bitcoin Funds Face $462.7M Outflow

A sharp divergence in weekly flows suggests a potential rotation of institutional capital toward Ethereum.

Institutional appetite for the two largest cryptocurrencies diverged sharply during the trading week of September 8-11, 2026. While spot Bitcoin ETFs faced heavy selling pressure, Ethereum ETFs emerged as the primary driver of inflows among major crypto funds.

According to data from Farside Investors, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows totaling approximately $462.7 million over the four-day period. The decline was consistent across the entire week, with Bitcoin ETFs recording net outflows in every trading session. The most significant hit occurred on Thursday, September 10, when funds saw a single-day loss of $282.7 million.

In contrast, Ethereum ETFs maintained a positive trajectory, ending the week with net inflows of $196.9 million. This result was secured late in the cycle; on Friday, September 11, Ethereum funds recorded $216.4 million in net inflows, a surge that turned the weekly total positive despite earlier volatility.

A Shift in Institutional Momentum

For much of the current ETF cycle, Bitcoin has served as the primary engine for institutional entry into the digital asset space. However, the market is currently experiencing a shift in momentum. While Bitcoin has historically led the charge, it is now facing concentrated selling pressure that has not mirrored the behavior of its largest peer.

This divergence suggests that Ethereum is attracting more consistent institutional interest. The fact that Ethereum ETFs remained positive—and even accelerated—during a week where Bitcoin saw universal outflows indicates that investors may no longer view the two assets as a monolithic block.

Implications for the Crypto Market

This trend points toward a potential rotation of institutional capital from Bitcoin to Ethereum. While Bitcoin remains the dominant asset by market capitalization and overall volume, the ability of ETH-based funds to offset losses seen in other major assets suggests growing confidence in Ethereum as a distinct asset class.

For portfolio managers, this movement may signal that Ethereum is being utilized as a strategic hedge or a growth play within a broader crypto allocation. If this rotation persists, it could decouple the price action of the two assets further, reducing the historical correlation that typically sees Ethereum follow Bitcoin's lead.

Looking Ahead

Market participants are now watching to see if this rotation is a short-term anomaly or a long-term structural shift in how institutions allocate digital assets. The primary question remains whether Bitcoin's current selling pressure is a temporary correction or a sign of waning institutional momentum. Meanwhile, the sustainability of Ethereum's inflows will determine if it can maintain its position as the new leader for weekly crypto fund growth.
