Eligible U.S. clients can now borrow cash against BTC, ETH, and SOL holdings without selling their positions.

Galaxy Digital has launched a crypto-backed portfolio line of credit designed for retail users, marking a strategic shift toward consumer-facing financial services. The product allows eligible clients to access liquidity by borrowing cash against their digital asset holdings without being forced to sell their positions.

Delivered through the GalaxyOne platform, the credit line is available to eligible U.S. clients. According to confirmed reports, the facility is backed by three of the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL). By utilizing these assets as collateral, users can obtain cash while maintaining their long-term exposure to the underlying digital assets.

Institutional Roots, Retail Expansion

Founded by Mike Novogratz, Galaxy Digital has historically operated as a powerhouse for institutional crypto services. Its core business model has centered on asset management, trading, and investment banking for high-net-worth individuals and corporate entities. This move into retail credit lines represents a calculated expansion into a broader market segment, aiming to bring institutional-grade lending tools to the individual investor.

The Utility of Crypto-Backed Credit

For the retail investor, the primary value of a portfolio line of credit is the ability to unlock liquidity without triggering a taxable event. In many jurisdictions, selling cryptocurrency to raise cash results in capital gains taxes; borrowing against those assets avoids this immediate tax liability. Furthermore, this mechanism allows users to fund diversified spending or create leveraged positions while keeping their core holdings intact, effectively treating their crypto portfolio as a flexible reserve of capital.

Market Outlook

As Galaxy Digital integrates these retail offerings into the GalaxyOne ecosystem, the industry will be watching for how the firm manages risk and collateral volatility in the retail sector. While the product is currently available to eligible U.S. clients, it remains to be seen if Galaxy will expand the credit line to other jurisdictions or add additional supported assets beyond Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.
