GMO-VP Launches Eighth Fintech Fund Targeting AI Convergence
The venture arm of GMO Internet Group targets JPY 10 billion to capitalize on the intersection of artificial intelligence and financial technology.
GMO VenturePartners (GMO-VP) has launched its eighth fintech-focused investment vehicle, the GMO Fintech Fund 8, to target the convergence of artificial intelligence and financial services. The fund aims to position the firm for what it describes as the full-fledged AI era.
The fund has achieved an initial close of approximately JPY 6.4 billion, with a total fundraising target of approximately JPY 10 billion. According to company filings and reports from Jiji Press, the fundraising period remains open until December 2027. The fund's primary mandate is the "AI x FinTech" sector, focusing on startups where AI is not merely a supporting tool but a core driver of financial innovation.
A Two-Decade Track Record
Established in 2005 as the venture capital arm of GMO Internet Group, GMO-VP has spent twenty years investing in fintech across Japan, the United States, India, and Southeast Asia. This institutional experience provides a foundation for the new fund's strategic pivot. As of December 2025, the firm has established seven previous funds and successfully guided 20 portfolio companies to initial public offerings (IPOs).
By integrating AI into its existing fintech thesis, GMO-VP intends to leverage the broader infrastructure of GMO Internet Group, which includes established operations in online banking, security, and payments. This synergy allows the firm to identify and scale AI-driven financial tools that can integrate with existing digital banking ecosystems.
The Shift to AI-Era Finance
This launch signals a broader strategic shift in venture capital toward "AI-era finance." The move reflects a growing industry belief that generative AI will fundamentally restructure how financial services are delivered and consumed. In a statement via Jiji Press, GMO-VP asserted that the combination of AI and fintech will "significantly rewrite global finance over the next 10 years."
For the global market, the fund's creation demonstrates how established fintech investors are repositioning their portfolios to capture the generative AI wave. Rather than treating AI as a separate vertical, GMO-VP is treating it as the new operating system for the entire financial sector, suggesting that the next generation of fintech unicorns will be those that build AI into their core architecture.
Future Outlook
As GMO-VP continues its fundraising push toward the JPY 10 billion goal, the market will be watching for the specific types of "AI x FinTech" companies the fund selects. While the initial close provides significant capital, the firm's ability to identify winners in a crowded AI landscape will be the primary metric of success. It remains to be seen which specific sub-sectors—such as automated wealth management, AI-driven risk assessment, or autonomous payments—will receive the bulk of the allocation.
