Gnosis Chain to Pivot from Independent L1 to Ethereum Economic Zone Rollup
GnosisDAO approves GIP-153, shifting the network toward a ZK-proven architecture to eliminate L2 fragmentation.
GnosisDAO has approved a strategic transition to move Gnosis Chain from an independent Layer-1 network to an Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) rollup. The move signals a fundamental shift in the project's architectural philosophy to better integrate with the broader Ethereum ecosystem.
Under the approved GIP-153 proposal, Gnosis Chain will retire its independent validator set and transition toward a ZK-proven rollup architecture. This structural change allows the network to settle directly on Ethereum, inheriting the mainnet's security and liquidity. As part of the transition, approximately 350,000 GNO tokens will be unlocked and freed up for stakers.
Solving L2 Fragmentation
The Ethereum Economic Zone is a framework co-developed by Gnosis and Zisk, with co-funding provided by the Ethereum Foundation. The initiative is designed to combat "L2 fragmentation," a persistent issue where liquidity and users are split across isolated scaling solutions.
Central to the EEZ is the concept of "synchronous composability." This allows smart contracts on an EEZ rollup to interact with the Ethereum mainnet or other participating EEZ rollups within a single atomic transaction. By removing the reliance on traditional bridges or the need for asset wrapping, the framework aims to create a more seamless user experience across different layers of the network.
A Strategic Pivot
This transition represents a significant departure from Gnosis' previous thesis that "credibly neutral blockspace" provided by standalone L1s would be the primary market demand. In a recent official blog post, Gnosis noted that Ethereum did not scale into a single economy, but rather "into a hundred islands."
By integrating into the EEZ, Gnosis Chain eliminates the operational burden of maintaining a duplicated stack of DeFi primitives and fragmented liquidity. This pivot allows the development team to shift its focus away from infrastructure maintenance and toward consumer-grade products, such as Gnosis Pay, while leveraging Ethereum's native security.
The Path Forward
While the strategic direction and the financial implications for GNO stakers are confirmed, the network will now begin the technical migration to its ZK-proven state. Observers will be watching how the transition affects current network performance and the speed at which other rollups adopt the EEZ framework to achieve synchronous composability. This shift marks a critical bet on the future of Ethereum's modularity, prioritizing shared security over independent sovereignty.
