Grab in Talks to Acquire Atome Financial in Deal Valued Over $2 Billion
The Southeast Asian superapp aims to bolster its fintech ecosystem by absorbing the profitable, SoftBank-backed BNPL provider.
Grab Holdings is in discussions to acquire a majority or controlling stake in Atome Financial, a Singapore-based buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) provider. The potential deal could value the fintech firm at more than $2 billion.
Atome Financial enters these talks with strong momentum, reporting 2025 revenue of $470 million, an 80% increase year-over-year. According to financial reports, the company also achieved its second consecutive year of pre-tax profitability in 2025. Atome specializes in BNPL services for both eCommerce and brick-and-mortar retailers, operating across diverse sectors including travel, beauty, and fashion.
Strategic Expansion
This move is part of a broader, aggressive expansion strategy by Grab to scale its financial services and delivery footprint. The company has recently executed several high-profile acquisitions to diversify its global and regional reach, including the $425 million purchase of U.S.-based Stash Financial and a $600 million deal to acquire Foodpanda's Taiwan business from Delivery Hero.
Grab's own financial health provides the foundation for such acquisitions. In the second quarter of 2026, the superapp reported revenue of $997 million, a 22% increase compared to the previous year. More notably, its operating profit surged to $19 million, marking a 186% year-over-year increase.
Industry Implications
Integrating a high-growth, profitable BNPL platform would significantly strengthen Grab's fintech ecosystem. By absorbing Atome's infrastructure, Grab can offer more sophisticated credit options to its massive user base, potentially increasing transaction volumes and user stickiness across its superapp. The move signals a shift toward consolidating fragmented fintech services in Southeast Asia to create a more seamless financial experience for consumers.
Future Outlook
While discussions are ongoing, the market is awaiting a formal agreement and the specific terms of the controlling stake. Key points of interest include how Grab intends to integrate Atome's merchant network and whether this acquisition will trigger further consolidation among regional BNPL providers. It remains to be seen if Grab will continue its trend of multi-million dollar acquisitions to fuel its growth in the financial sector, as it seeks to dominate the digital economy in the region.
