HashKey Cloud joins Stacks as launch partner for institutional Bitcoin staking
Asia's largest institutional staking provider will serve as an sBTC signer and participate in the inaugural Genesis Bond.
HashKey Cloud has partnered with Stacks as a launch partner for self-custodial Bitcoin staking. The institutional staking arm of HashKey Group will participate in the protocol's inaugural "Genesis Bond" and serve as a signer for sBTC, the mechanism enabling Bitcoin movement between the base layer and the Stacks network.
Stacks founder Muneeb Ali announced the partnership during an event in Hong Kong. HashKey Cloud, which manages approximately HKD 29 billion in staked assets across more than 40 blockchain networks, joins other institutional participants in the Genesis Bond, including 21Shares and UTXO Management, a subsidiary of Nakamoto Inc. The Genesis Bond is scheduled to launch around September 10, 2026.
The Mechanics of Bitcoin Staking
Stacks utilizes a consensus mechanism known as Proof of Transfer (PoT), specifically the PoX-5 design for its Protocol Bonds. This system allows Bitcoin holders to earn yield in BTC while keeping their assets timelocked on the Bitcoin blockchain under their own keys. By requiring participants to timelock BTC on the base layer and lock a corresponding amount of STX tokens on the Stacks network, the protocol enables Bitcoin to become a productive asset without requiring users to trust a centralized custodian or move their BTC off the base layer.
Central to this ecosystem is sBTC, a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed protocol. To ensure security and decentralization, sBTC is managed by a decentralized set of signers. Deposits and withdrawals from the protocol require a 70% consensus among these signers to be processed.
Institutional Implications
The entry of HashKey Cloud provides significant institutional validation for the Stacks ecosystem. By offering a path for large-scale capital to earn yield on BTC without sacrificing self-custody, Stacks aims to increase the overall utility of Bitcoin. This shift could attract substantial institutional liquidity, potentially strengthening the long-term investment case for the STX token.
"HashKey Cloud brings the largest institutional staking operation in Asia into Bitcoin Staking, and that is exactly the kind of participant the Genesis Bond is built for," Muneeb Ali stated regarding the partnership.
Next Steps for the Network
As the network moves toward the September launch, the focus remains on the expansion of the signer network to maintain the required decentralized consensus. Dr. Xiao Feng, Chairman and CEO of HashKey Group, noted that the firm is "excited to join the Stacks signer network," emphasizing the goal of bringing greater institutional participation to the Bitcoin ecosystem. Market observers will be watching the Genesis Bond's initial performance to determine if the model can successfully scale institutional BTC yield.
"We're excited to join the Stacks signer network and participate in Bitcoin Staking, supporting the infrastructure that brings greater utility and institutional participation to Bitcoin," Dr. Feng added.
