Hyperliquid in Talks With Kraken Parent to Bring Crypto Perps to US Traders

The decentralized exchange is negotiating a deal with Payward to route derivatives trading through the regulated Bitnomial platform.

Hyperliquid is in advanced discussions with Payward, the parent company of Kraken, to offer cryptocurrency perpetual futures to traders based in the United States. The move marks the decentralized exchange's first strategic attempt to enter the restrictive US market.

According to reports, the proposed partnership would route Hyperliquid's decentralized exchange services through Bitnomial, a US-regulated derivatives exchange owned by Payward. By utilizing Bitnomial's existing regulatory framework, Hyperliquid aims to provide a legal pathway for US users to access perpetual futures, a product class that is otherwise heavily restricted for retail traders on most offshore or decentralized platforms.

The Regulatory Bridge

Hyperliquid has established itself as a prominent player in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space, specializing in high-performance perpetual futures. However, the US regulatory environment has historically created a wall between decentralized trading and domestic users, particularly regarding derivatives. Bitnomial provides the necessary compliance infrastructure to bridge this gap, allowing a DEX to operate within the bounds of US law.

This strategic pivot follows recent comments from Donald Trump regarding the importance of bringing cryptocurrency operations onshore. The shift suggests a growing trend among crypto firms to align their operational structures with a potentially more favorable or structured US regulatory landscape.

Industry Implications

If the deal is finalized, it would create a significant precedent for the integration of decentralized trading technology into the regulated financial system. For the broader industry, this partnership signals a shift toward "hybrid" models where the efficiency and transparency of a DEX are paired with the legal protections and oversight of a regulated entity.

Such a move could encourage other decentralized protocols to seek similar partnerships with regulated US firms, potentially triggering a wave of onshore migrations for DeFi services that have previously avoided the US market due to legal risks.

What to Watch

While the talks are described as advanced, the final structure of the agreement remains to be seen. Market observers will be watching to see if the deal receives the necessary nods from US regulators and how the integration between Hyperliquid's decentralized architecture and Bitnomial's regulated environment will function in practice. It remains to be confirmed when, or if, the service will officially launch for US retail traders.
