Hyperscale Data Converts Michigan Bitcoin Mine into $1.2 Billion AI Hub
The company is repurposing its Dowagiac facility to meet exploding demand for AI compute capacity.
Hyperscale Data has shuttered its bitcoin mining operations in Dowagiac, Michigan, to transition the site into a massive AI data center. The strategic pivot, finalized on September 1, 2026, reflects a broader industry shift toward high-margin artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The company, traded on the NYSE American as GPUS, is executing the conversion through its subsidiary, Alliance Cloud Services, under a new Master Services Agreement. The initial contract is valued at more than $1.2 billion over a 10-year term, which includes two five-year extension options. To help finance the physical buildout of the AI infrastructure, Hyperscale Data liquidated approximately 65 BTC, generating roughly $5.1 million in capital.
Scaling Compute Capacity
The Dowagiac campus is a significant industrial asset, spanning 617,000 square feet across 34.5 acres. While the site has a total potential power capacity of approximately 340 MW, the AI rollout will begin in phases. Initial compute capacity is set at 20 MW, with the company planning to add further 10 MW tranches every 90 days to scale operations.
Hyperscale Data has operated at the Michigan site since at least March 2021, where the facility previously functioned as a Sentium bitcoin mining complex. The transition comes as data center operators increasingly view AI colocation as a more lucrative use of existing power grids than cryptocurrency mining. CEO William Horne described AI colocation opportunities as a "higher-margin use of the company’s power and physical infrastructure."
The AI Power Land Grab
This move exemplifies a growing trend in the tech sector often described as a "power land grab." Because AI inference and training require immense amounts of electricity and specialized cooling, companies are racing to secure existing energy-intensive sites. Repurposing a bitcoin mine is faster and more efficient than building a new utility-scale facility from the ground up, allowing operators to capitalize on the exploding demand for compute almost immediately.
Beyond the immediate revenue, the shift highlights a change in corporate treasury management. By selling mined assets to fund physical hardware, Hyperscale Data is effectively converting volatile digital currency into tangible, income-generating real estate and infrastructure.
Future Outlook
As the facility scales toward its 340 MW potential, the industry will be watching how quickly Hyperscale Data can deploy its planned 90-day capacity tranches. While the initial $1.2 billion deal provides a stable long-term foundation, the ultimate scale of the campus depends on the continued demand for AI colocation and the company's ability to manage the massive power requirements of the site.
