Hyperscale Data Liquidates Bitcoin Treasury to Fund Michigan AI Campus

The Bitcoin miner is pivoting to AI infrastructure, leveraging DeFi loans and asset sales to build a 617,000 sq ft facility.

Bitcoin mining firm Hyperscale Data is pivoting toward artificial intelligence infrastructure by funding a massive new data center campus in Michigan. The company is financing the transition through a combination of strategic Bitcoin sales and decentralized finance (DeFi) credit facilities.

To bankroll the construction, Hyperscale Data sold approximately 100 BTC in July 2026. The company later expanded its liquidation efforts, selling an additional 685 BTC for roughly $43 million to further fund the project and reduce its debt obligations. These moves have reduced the company's total treasury holdings to 275 BTC. In addition to direct sales, the firm secured a $30 million Bitcoin-backed credit facility via the Morpho Protocol at a variable interest rate of 4.9%.

The Dowagiac Buildout

The capital is being deployed toward a 617,000 sq ft AI data center campus located in Dowagiac, Michigan. This physical expansion is anchored by a 10-year master services agreement with a California-based neocloud and AI provider. According to the terms of the deal, the hosting agreement could generate potential revenue estimated between $1.2 billion and $3 billion over the life of the contract.

CEO Will Horne described the project as a significant step in expanding the company's footprint within the Michigan area.

The Crypto-to-AI Pivot

This shift reflects a broader industry trend where Bitcoin mining firms are diversifying into High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI data centers. By leveraging existing power infrastructure and energy contracts, these firms can capture the surging demand for GPU capacity. This strategy allows operators to create more stable, long-term revenue streams, reducing their historical reliance on the volatile rewards associated with Bitcoin mining.

Market Implications

The Hyperscale Data project highlights a growing intersection between DeFi lending and industrial development. By using volatile digital assets as collateral for traditional physical infrastructure, firms can unlock liquidity without fully exiting their crypto positions. However, this financial structure introduces specific risks; a sharp drop in Bitcoin prices could trigger liquidation events while the company is still managing the high capital expenditures of construction.

What to Watch

Industry observers will be monitoring the construction progress in Dowagiac and the actualization of the projected multi-billion dollar revenue. As more miners pivot to AI, the competition for power-dense sites and the stability of Bitcoin-backed corporate debt will become critical metrics for the sector's long-term viability.
