Hyperscale Data has sold a significant portion of its digital asset treasury to finance the expansion of its AI infrastructure in Michigan. The move signals a strategic shift as the company converts volatile cryptocurrency holdings into tangible high-performance computing assets.

Hyperscale Data (NYSE American: GPUS) sold approximately 685 Bitcoin for roughly $43 million in cash. These funds are earmarked specifically for the development and expansion of the company's AI data center campus in Michigan. Following the liquidation, Hyperscale Data retains approximately 275 Bitcoin in its treasury.

A Pivot to AI Infrastructure

This sale is part of a broader transition for Hyperscale Data as it pivots its business model from Bitcoin mining toward AI infrastructure. The Michigan campus currently operates as a dual-use facility, supporting both traditional mining operations and AI colocation. To support this growth, the company recently acquired an additional 48.5 acres of land adjacent to the existing site, bringing the total campus size to approximately 83 acres. The company has set an ambitious target to reach a full buildout of 340 megawatts (MW) by 2029.

The 'Crypto-to-AI' Trend

This liquidation exemplifies a growing trend among data center operators known as the "crypto-to-AI" pivot. In this model, firms leverage their existing power capacity and digital asset treasuries to enter the high-growth AI compute market. By converting BTC into cash, Hyperscale Data is mitigating the volatility of its balance sheet to fund the capital-intensive requirements of AI hardware and facility scaling. This strategy allows the company to capitalize on the surging demand for AI training and inference capabilities while utilizing the infrastructure foundations laid during the mining boom.

Funding Strategy and Next Steps

This is not the first time the company has tapped its Bitcoin holdings for the Michigan project. Hyperscale Data previously sold 100 Bitcoin and established a Bitcoin-backed credit facility to provide ongoing liquidity for the build.

Investors and industry analysts will now be watching the pace of the Michigan campus's deployment. The primary milestones remaining include the successful integration of the newly acquired acreage and the steady scaling of power capacity toward the 340 MW goal. Whether the company continues to liquidate its remaining 275 Bitcoin to fund further phases of the 2029 roadmap remains to be seen.
