Liquid Network Resumes After $320 Million Exploit Drains BTC Reserve

Blockstream's Bitcoin sidechain restarts block production after a software bug allowed attackers to mint unbacked tokens.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · September 10, 2026

The Liquid Network resumed block production on September 10, 2026, following a $320 million exploit that nearly emptied its Bitcoin reserve. The incident has left the sidechain's peg-in and peg-out operations suspended as the federation works to restore the missing funds.

The exploit stemmed from a consensus bug in the open-source Elements software, specifically involving cache keys for range proofs. This vulnerability allowed attackers to mint approximately 4,000 unbacked Liquid Bitcoin (LBTC). These fraudulent tokens were then used to withdraw 3,996 BTC from the federation reserve via the SideSwap service. The vulnerability has since been addressed in Elements version 23.3.4.

The Federated Model

Liquid operates as a federated sidechain where LBTC is designed to be backed 1:1 by BTC held in a multi-signature wallet controlled by 15 functionaries. Because the exploit bypassed validation at the transaction level, both the network and the peg-out service accepted the unbacked tokens as legitimate. This failure resulted in the federation reserve plummeting from approximately 4,205 BTC to just 197 BTC.

Market Implications

The scale of the theft threatened the stability of the LBTC peg, creating a risk of a market run as the reserve was almost entirely depleted. To maintain confidence in the asset, Blockstream CEO Adam Back issued a public guarantee that the 1:1 LBTC to BTC peg will be covered. The event underscores the inherent risks of the federated peg model and the extreme complexity of confidential-transaction code, where a single software flaw can bypass systemic safeguards.

Path to Recovery

While Adam Back confirmed that "network resumption is on the way," the system is not yet fully operational. The suspension of peg-in and peg-out services remains in effect while the federation focuses on replenishing the BTC reserve to ensure all LBTC holders can eventually exit their positions. Observers are now watching for the official timeline of the reserve restoration and the full reactivation of cross-chain transfers.
