Metaplanet to Raise $135 Million to Expand Bitcoin Treasury
The Tokyo-listed firm is issuing 'MERCURY' preferred shares to fuel its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy.
Tokyo-listed Metaplanet is expanding its Bitcoin treasury through a new $135 million capital raise, cementing its role as a primary corporate adopter of the digital asset in Asia. The move signals a deepening commitment to a treasury model that prioritizes Bitcoin as a hedge against monetary instability.
To fund the expansion, Metaplanet is issuing 23.6 million 'MERCURY' Class B preferred shares to raise approximately ¥21.25 billion ($135 million). The company has earmarked roughly $95 million of these proceeds specifically for the purchase of additional Bitcoin. The remaining funds will be used to implement income-generating strategies and reduce corporate debt by redeeming existing bonds.
The Bitcoin Standard in Asia
Metaplanet has pivoted its business model to mirror the 'Bitcoin Standard' popularized by MicroStrategy, utilizing equity and debt financing to accumulate Bitcoin as its primary reserve asset. This strategy is driven by the company's view that global markets are undergoing a structural monetary shift. In a company statement, Metaplanet noted that it views Bitcoin as a superior long-term store of value due to its transparency, portability, and scarcity.
Currently, the company holds 30,823 Bitcoin, positioning it as one of the largest corporate holders of the asset globally. By shifting away from traditional cash reserves, Metaplanet is attempting to insulate its balance sheet from the volatility of fiat currencies while leveraging the growth potential of the cryptocurrency market.
Strategic Expansion into the U.S.
Beyond simple accumulation, Metaplanet is leveraging its holdings to establish a footprint in the United States. The company is launching a U.S.-based Bitcoin treasury company by contributing 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash. This move allows Metaplanet to acquire a majority stake in the Nasdaq-listed Super League Enterprise, which is slated to be renamed Superplanet.
This transition from a regional player to a participant in the U.S. public markets demonstrates a sophisticated approach to corporate treasury management. By using preferred equity like the MERCURY shares, Metaplanet can scale its holdings without relying exclusively on traditional debt instruments.
Market Implications
This aggressive expansion highlights a growing trend of institutional adoption across Asia. As more corporations explore Bitcoin as a treasury reserve, Metaplanet's blueprint may serve as a template for other Asian firms seeking to diversify away from local currency risks. The success of the 'Superplanet' venture will likely be a key indicator of whether this corporate Bitcoin model can be successfully exported to the U.S. equity markets.
