Public Bitcoin Miners Cut Hashrate by 13.4% to Pivot Toward AI Infrastructure

Public Bitcoin mining companies are aggressively redirecting their power infrastructure and capital toward Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC). This strategic shift comes as firms seek to offset the financial pressures of the crypto market by leveraging their most valuable asset: existing access to the power grid.

According to reports from InvestX, public miners have collectively reduced their contribution to the global hashrate by 13.4% to prioritize the build-out of AI and HPC infrastructure. Leading the transition are major public players including Core Scientific, Hut 8, and Cipher Mining, all of whom are converting existing sites into AI-ready facilities. The financial impact of this pivot is already visible; Bitdeer's AI cloud revenue jumped tenfold to $14 million, contributing to a total revenue increase of 47% to approximately $229 million.

The Power Bottleneck

This migration is driven by a critical shortage of electrical infrastructure. Following the April 2024 Bitcoin halving, block rewards dropped to 3.125 BTC, squeezing profit margins for miners. Simultaneously, the AI boom created an unprecedented demand for data centers. However, building new high-voltage power connections is a slow process, with median wait times for grid connections in the U.S. now exceeding four years.

Because AI companies cannot wait years for new permits, they are leasing "plugged-in" sites from Bitcoin miners who already possess the necessary electrical permits and grid access. As TrendyTechTribe analysis puts it, "The scarce asset in the AI boom is not a chip. It is a plug."

A New Business Model

This pivot represents a fundamental shift in the business model of public mining firms, moving them from "crypto-asset producers" to "energy infrastructure landlords." By securing high-value, dollar-denominated hosting contracts, these companies are replacing volatile crypto-rewards with stable, predictable revenue streams. This is exemplified by TeraWulf, which is developing AI infrastructure in Kentucky at a former aluminum smelter site, with reports indicating a deal involving Anthropic.

Network Implications

While the shift stabilizes the balance sheets of public companies, it introduces new risks to the Bitcoin network. As public firms diversify into AI, there is a possibility that network security could become increasingly centralized in the hands of private, unlisted miners who are not pivoting. This trend could potentially impact the long-term decentralization of the network.

What to Watch

Industry observers are now monitoring how quickly other public miners can convert their sites and whether the surge in AI hosting revenue will completely decouple these firms from the price volatility of Bitcoin. While analyst reports suggest massive potential valuations for these "power landlords," many of the largest lease agreements remain outside of official corporate filings, leaving the full scale of the transition yet to be verified.
