Responsible Fintech Institute Pilots Post-Quantum Security for Digital Assets
A consortium of banks and regulators is testing quantum-resistant cryptography to protect financial infrastructure from future computing threats.
The Responsible Fintech Institute (RFI) has launched a cross-regional pilot program designed to evaluate post-quantum security for digital asset transactions. The initiative aims to prepare financial infrastructure for the eventual threat posed by quantum computing to current encryption standards.
Convened by the RFI and powered by technology partner Safeheron, the pilot focuses on the implementation of post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Specifically, the program is testing a multi-party computation (MPC) protocol that supports the ML-DSA-65 digital signature standard, as defined by NIST FIPS 204. The technical evaluation involves active testing of wallet generation and on-chain transfer activity conducted on the quantum-resistant NEAR testnet.
A Collaborative Regulatory Approach
The pilot is notable for its integration of both private financial institutions and government oversight bodies. Participating banks include Bison Bank and DK Bank, while regulatory stakeholders include the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), the Gelephu Financial Services Office (GFSO), and the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). This collaboration allows the consortium to test the viability of quantum-resilient infrastructure within a framework that considers both operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
The Race Against 'Q-Day'
The urgency of this pilot stems from the looming threat of "Q-Day"—the theoretical point at which quantum computers become powerful enough to break the asymmetric encryption currently securing the global financial system. For digital assets, which rely heavily on public-key cryptography, the risk is existential; a quantum-capable adversary could potentially forge signatures and seize assets.
By transitioning to PQC standards like ML-DSA-65, the industry seeks to ensure that digital signatures remain secure even in a post-quantum environment. The shift toward MPC protocols further enhances security by ensuring that no single point of failure exists during the signing process, combining quantum resistance with distributed trust.
Future Infrastructure
The ultimate objective of the RFI-led program is to evaluate these security protocols in a real-world simulation before moving toward broader implementation. The consortium has indicated that the goal is to eventually open-source the quantum-resilient infrastructure developed during the pilot, providing a blueprint for other financial institutions to secure their digital asset pipelines. Observers will now be watching for the results of the NEAR testnet trials to see if the ML-DSA-65 standard can be scaled without compromising transaction speed or user experience.
