Storj Labs Files Chapter 11, Seeks Equity Path for Tokenholders

The decentralized storage company says network operations will continue uninterrupted while pursuing an untested reorganization strategy.

Storj Labs filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 26, 2026, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of West Virginia (Case No. 5:26-bk-00512). The filing proposes a court-approved mechanism to provide STORJ tokenholders with equity in the reorganized company—an untested legal strategy in corporate bankruptcy proceedings.

Network Operations Continue

The decentralized storage network will continue operating normally during the restructuring. This separation between the legal entity and the peer-to-peer network reflects Storj's hybrid architecture: Storj Labs manages development and business operations, while storage infrastructure runs on a global network of independent nodes.

The company stated the restructuring aims to resolve legacy liabilities that predate its current strategy. In an official blog post, Storj Labs described the process as "aligning ownership among management, the decentralized community, Token holders, and investors."

A Test Case for Crypto Bankruptcy

The tokenholder equity proposal has been characterized by multiple outlets as an untested legal strategy. Typically, cryptocurrency token holders are not recognized as equity owners in a legal sense, leaving them without formal stakeholder status when the issuing company faces insolvency.

If the bankruptcy court approves an equity pathway for STORJ holders, the case could establish precedent for handling community ownership structures in future crypto-related bankruptcies. Specific mechanics—including eligibility criteria, allocation percentages, or lockup requirements—have not been disclosed and remain subject to court approval.

Corporate Background

Storj is among the longest-running decentralized storage providers, operating a peer-to-peer network that competes with centralized cloud storage services. The company was acquired by Inveniam IO in October 2025.

The crypto industry is watching the case closely as a potential model for reconciling decentralized community ownership with traditional corporate insolvency frameworks. Court proceedings will determine whether the proposed tokenholder equity pathway moves forward.
