Strategy Inc. Sells $105 Million in Bitcoin to Fund Dividends and Share Buybacks
The world's largest corporate bitcoin holder is pivoting from a pure buy-and-hold strategy toward active capital management.
Strategy Inc., the firm formerly known as MicroStrategy, sold 1,638 bitcoin for approximately $105 million during the week ending August 2, 2026. The move marks a tactical shift in how the company manages its massive digital asset treasury to support traditional corporate financial obligations.
According to company filings and reports from Quartz and CoinDesk, the proceeds from the sale—specifically $104.73 million—were utilized to fund preferred stock dividends and the repurchase of STRC preferred shares. In a separate but related effort to bolster its liquidity, Strategy raised approximately $290 million through its At-The-Market (ATM) program by selling common stock. These combined actions pushed the company's USD reserve to $4 billion as of August 2.
A Shift in Corporate Identity
This transition follows a broader institutional overhaul. In February 2025, the company rebranded from MicroStrategy to Strategy Inc., positioning itself as the first and largest "Bitcoin Treasury Company." For years, the firm was defined by an aggressive, singular focus on accumulating bitcoin. However, the company has recently introduced a "monetization program" designed to strengthen its balance sheet and optimize its capital framework. By utilizing both the ATM program and the strategic sale of digital assets, the company is moving away from a passive hoard toward a more dynamic financial model.
Implications for Digital Asset Treasuries
This pivot is significant because it represents a departure from the "buy-and-hold" playbook that previously defined the company's relationship with bitcoin. By selling a portion of its holdings to maintain preferred stock and return value to shareholders, Strategy is demonstrating how a public company can integrate a highly volatile asset into a standard corporate finance structure. This approach allows the firm to leverage its bitcoin holdings not just as a store of value, but as a source of liquid capital to manage debt and equity obligations.
Future Outlook
Market observers are now watching to see if this opportunistic monetization becomes a permanent fixture of Strategy's operations. While the company continues to hold a massive reserve of bitcoin, the decision to liquidate portions for dividends and buybacks suggests a new phase of maturity in its treasury strategy. It remains to be seen whether other corporate treasuries will follow this model of active monetization to balance the volatility of digital assets with the demands of public shareholders.
