Strive and Strategy Diverge on Bitcoin Treasury Tactics
One firm leverages preferred equity to accumulate Bitcoin while the other pivots to balance sheet optimization via stock buybacks.
Strive Inc. and Strategy adopted opposing capital allocation strategies this September, marking a significant split in how Bitcoin-treasury companies manage their assets. While Strive aggressively expanded its digital asset holdings, Strategy paused its Bitcoin acquisitions to prioritize the repurchase of its own equity.
Between August 31 and September 4, 2026, Strive acquired 1,375 BTC at an average price of $79,281 per coin, bringing the company's total holdings to 24,531 BTC. The firm funded these acquisitions primarily through the sale of its SATA preferred stock. During this same window, Strive's cash and equivalents rose from $183.5 million to $202.6 million.
In contrast, Strategy shifted its focus away from the crypto market to address its internal capital structure. The company spent $176.3 million of its USD cash reserves to buy back 1,810,885 shares of its STRC preferred stock. This move aligns with Strategy's policy of repurchasing STRC shares when they trade below their $100 stated amount, a tactic designed to reduce future dividend obligations.
The Strategic Divide
This divergence highlights two distinct philosophies regarding corporate treasury management. Strive is utilizing its SATA preferred stock as a funding vehicle to maximize Bitcoin exposure, effectively leveraging its equity market presence to grow hard-asset reserves. Strategy is prioritizing balance sheet optimization; by using cash to retire preferred shares, the firm is signaling a transition from pure asset accumulation toward stabilizing its cost of capital and improving shareholder value through buybacks.
Market Implications
The relationship between the two firms adds a layer of complexity to these moves. Strive currently maintains a position of 505,000 shares in Strategy's STRC preferred stock. Consequently, Strive is simultaneously betting on Bitcoin while holding a stake in a company that is prioritizing the retirement of those very shares over the purchase of more Bitcoin.
What to Watch
Investors are now monitoring whether Strategy's pause in Bitcoin purchases is a temporary tactical shift or a long-term change in mandate. Additionally, the market will watch Strive's ability to continue funding BTC acquisitions through SATA sales without overextending its preferred equity issuance. Whether the aggressive accumulation model or the balance sheet optimization model proves more sustainable in a volatile price environment remains the central question for the sector.
