Tether Reports $1.5 Billion Q2 Profit as Reserve Buffer Dips to $4.11 Billion

The stablecoin issuer grew USD₮ issuance to $184.6 billion and expanded gold holdings despite a shrinking surplus of assets over liabilities.

Tether reported a net operating profit of $1.5 billion for the second quarter of 2026, reinforcing the financial strength of the world's largest stablecoin issuer. The results underscore a business model that operates effectively as a massive Treasury fund, though a notable decline in its reserve buffer has drawn scrutiny.

According to company data and reports from Kitco News, profit was driven primarily by Tether's U.S. Treasury and repo portfolios. By the end of the quarter, USD₮ issuance climbed to $184.6 billion. However, the company's reserve buffer—the amount by which total reserves exceed liabilities—fell to $4.11 billion as of June 30, 2026. Additionally, Tether reduced its secured lending by $2.38 billion during the period.

Strategic Diversification

To diversify reserves away from purely cash-like instruments, Tether aggressively increased its physical commodity holdings. The company added 14 tonnes of gold during the second quarter, bringing total holdings to over 146 tonnes, valued at approximately $18.8 billion. This shift reflects a long-term strategy to integrate strategic assets into its backing mechanism to hedge against volatility in traditional financial markets.

Market Implications

While operating profit remains robust, the shrinking reserve buffer is a critical metric for stablecoin solvency. A smaller surplus of assets over liabilities can reduce the cushion available during periods of extreme market stress or mass redemptions. Despite this, the continued growth in USD₮ issuance suggests that market participants maintain confidence in the stablecoin's peg and the company's ability to manage its obligations.

Outlook and Stability

CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that the second quarter tested the assets backing the reserves under real market pressure, asserting that USD₮ remained fully backed throughout the volatility. Investors and regulators will likely monitor whether Tether continues to prioritize gold accumulation over maintaining a larger liquid reserve buffer. The company's ability to balance high-yield Treasury returns with the liquidity requirements of its $184.6 billion issuance remains the central pillar of its operational stability.
