Unstoppable Domains drops ICANN bids for .crypto and .bitcoin extensions

The blockchain naming service is retreating from plans to integrate web3 domains into the traditional internet, citing a niche market.

Unstoppable Domains has abandoned its plans to seek ICANN recognition for several of its blockchain-based domain extensions. The move marks a significant pivot away from the company's ambition to merge decentralized naming services with the global internet infrastructure.

The company has dropped bids for approximately 9 to 14 extensions, including high-profile suffixes such as .crypto, .bitcoin, .wallet, .brave, .polygon, .nft, .dao, .unstoppable, .zil, and .blockchain. While the company is retreating from these specific bids, it confirmed it is still proceeding with applications for .agi and .robot. To mitigate the impact on users, Unstoppable Domains is offering refunds to customers who purchased the abandoned extensions after specific dates in 2024 and 2025.

The DNS Divide

Since 2012, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has managed the global Domain Name System (DNS). Most web3 domains operate exclusively on blockchains, meaning they do not resolve in standard web browsers without the use of specific plugins or native support from browsers like Brave. Unstoppable Domains had previously encouraged users to secure these names in anticipation of the 2026 ICANN application round, which would have potentially allowed these blockchain assets to function as standard internet addresses.

A Shift in Business Focus

The decision to abandon the bids reflects a stark change in the company's internal metrics and market outlook. Traditional DNS domains now account for more than 90% of Unstoppable Domains' business. This shift suggests that the demand for standard internet presence far outweighs the appetite for purely decentralized naming.

CEO Matthew Gould characterized the current state of the web3 market as "small" and "niche," signaling a cooling of the expectations that once drove the push for mainstream blockchain integration. The retreat also highlights the steep financial and regulatory hurdles associated with ICANN, including strict registration data disclosure requirements that often clash with the anonymity preferred by the crypto community.

Implications for Holders

For many users, this reversal means their blockchain domains will remain niche on-chain tools rather than evolving into mainstream internet addresses. The move underscores the ongoing difficulty of bridging the gap between decentralized protocols and the legacy systems that govern the web.

Industry observers will now be watching whether other web3 naming services attempt the ICANN route or if the sector fully accepts its role as a parallel, rather than integrated, naming system. For now, the focus for Unstoppable Domains appears to have shifted toward the traditional DNS market where the bulk of its revenue now resides.
