US DOJ Seizes $61 Million in Crypto Linked to Iranian Oil Sales
Prosecutors target a $1.5 billion illicit pipeline used to bypass sanctions and fund the IRGC.
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a civil forfeiture complaint to seize approximately $61 million in cryptocurrency allegedly derived from Iranian black-market oil and petroleum sales. The move is part of a broader effort to disrupt the financial lifelines of the Iranian government and its military proxies.
According to court documents, the seized funds are a fraction of a much larger $1.5 billion illicit network, internally referred to as "Entity A." Prosecutors allege this underground pipeline utilized unhosted wallets and an Iranian exchange to funnel money to the Iranian government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The DOJ claims that two Chinese companies, Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale, facilitated the operation by laundering the funds through accounts on the Binance exchange.
Geopolitical Context
This legal action arrives amid severe instability in the Middle East. Since February 2026, the U.S. and Iran have been engaged in escalating missile warfare, which has significantly disrupted global oil flows and driven up energy prices. The conflict has been characterized by a strict U.S. naval blockade and active fighting around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy shipments.
As traditional banking channels have been severed by sanctions and military conflict, the Iranian government has increasingly turned to cryptocurrency to maintain trade and sustain its economy. By leveraging digital assets, Tehran has attempted to bypass the U.S. financial system and continue the sale of petroleum to buyers in China and elsewhere.
Industry Implications
The case underscores a growing trend of sanctioned states utilizing blockchain technology to fund military operations and nuclear programs. It specifically highlights the vulnerability of centralized exchanges and the role of third-party facilitators in state-sponsored money laundering. The involvement of Chinese firms and the use of Binance accounts are likely to trigger intensified regulatory scrutiny of cryptocurrency pipelines and the compliance protocols of global exchanges.
"Today's action demonstrates our determination to deprive the Government of Iran and its terrorist proxies of the illegal money they rely on to threaten the lives and safety of the citizens of the United States and elsewhere," said Sean S. Buckley, Deputy U.S. Attorney.
What's Next
Legal proceedings will now determine the final forfeiture of the $61 million. While the DOJ has identified the specific role of Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale, it remains to be seen if further indictments will be filed against other facilitators within the "Entity A" network. Observers will also be watching for how the U.S. Treasury and other regulators respond to the identified gaps in exchange monitoring that allowed the laundering of $1.5 billion in state funds.
