US Spot Bitcoin ETFs See $463 Million Outflow as Ether ETFs Gain Momentum

A sharp reversal in Bitcoin ETF flows coincides with rising interest in Ether, signaling a potential institutional capital rotation.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · September 14, 2026

US spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced a significant reversal in momentum between September 8 and September 11, recording approximately $463 million in net outflows. This downturn marks a sharp pivot for the asset, which had previously maintained a three-week streak of positive inflows.

According to data reported by CoinTurk News and Traders Union, the net outflows for Bitcoin ETFs totaled $462.7 million during the four-day window. In stark contrast, spot Ether ETFs saw a surge in institutional appetite, logging approximately $197 million in net inflows over the same period. This divergence highlights a contrasting trend in how investors are positioning themselves within the two largest cryptocurrency assets.

Market Context and Resistance

This shift follows a period of aggressive growth for Bitcoin, which had seen a 24% rally over the course of two weeks. Despite this momentum, the asset is currently encountering technical headwinds. Analysts are closely monitoring the $81,700 level, representing the 365-day simple moving average. Historically, breaching this specific threshold has signaled the commencement of broader bull market cycles, but Bitcoin has struggled to break through this valuation ceiling.

Julio Moreno, Head of Research at CryptoQuant, noted that Bitcoin "simply needs to digest the overhead supply and break its valuation ceilings before a new leg up can develop." This technical consolidation is occurring against a backdrop of macroeconomic pressure, as institutional investors weigh the impact of US government debt levels and expectations regarding interest rates.

Implications of Capital Rotation

The opposing flow of funds suggests a "capital rotation" within the digital asset market. Rather than exiting the crypto ecosystem entirely, institutional investors appear to be diversifying their holdings, shifting capital away from Bitcoin and toward Ethereum. This movement indicates a change in the dominant market narrative, as investors seek different risk-adjusted returns in the current macroeconomic environment.

When Bitcoin struggles to maintain its upward trajectory against key resistance levels, Ethereum often becomes a primary alternative for institutional liquidity. This rotation suggests that the market is no longer treating Bitcoin as the sole vehicle for institutional crypto exposure, but is instead distributing risk across the ecosystem.

Outlook for Digital Assets

Market participants are now watching to see if the trend of divergent flows persists or if Bitcoin can reclaim its momentum. The primary focus remains on whether Bitcoin can decisively break the $81,700 resistance level to trigger a new rally. Until such a breakout occurs, the market may continue to see a period of consolidation, with Ethereum potentially capturing a larger share of institutional inflows as investors hedge their bets.
