Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has rejected predictions that artificial intelligence will undermine Bitcoin's security and trigger a massive price collapse. The debate underscores a growing tension between analysts who fear AI-powered attacks and those who believe the network's fundamental architecture is secure.
The disagreement follows a prediction by investor Liron Shapira, who assigned a 50% confidence level to the theory that Bitcoin's price would crash by more than 50% within two years. Shapira's thesis rests on the idea that AI could undermine the network's overall robustness, creating systemic vulnerabilities that the blockchain cannot withstand.
The Resilience of Proof-of-Work
Buterin countered this view by distinguishing between operational bugs and fundamental cryptographic failures. He described the probability of AI achieving an actual break in Bitcoin's hashing mechanisms or its Proof-of-Work (PoW) system as "tiny."
According to Buterin, the primary challenge is not the existence of AI, but the "transition" of cybersecurity as both attackers and defenders adopt new tools. He expressed optimism about long-term security, stating, "I expect BTC to handle at least any issues that do not require social consensus well." In his view, most AI-related threats can be mitigated through standard software updates and mining-pool upgrades, which do not require the difficult process of achieving network-wide social consensus.
The Cybersecurity Transition
This clash of opinions reflects a broader industry concern regarding "transition risk." While generative AI can automate phishing and the discovery of software vulnerabilities, it has not yet shown the ability to defeat established cryptographic functions like SHA-256. The fear among some analysts is that AI-assisted attackers may move faster than open-source defenders can patch holes.

The distinction Buterin makes is critical for the market's long-term valuation of Bitcoin. Operational vulnerabilities are routine and can be patched via code. However, a fundamental cryptographic failure would be catastrophic, as it would require a network-wide social consensus to fix—a process that is notoriously slow and contentious in the Bitcoin community. If the core cryptography were broken, the foundational trust and value of the entire network would be at risk.
