The average cost of a data breach for organizations in India has reached a record high of ₹25.5 crore in 2026. This surge highlights a deepening crisis in cybersecurity resilience as the financial toll of digital intrusions continues to climb.

According to a report by IBM, the 2026 figure marks the latest peak in a multi-year upward trend. The cost had previously risen to ₹22 crore in 2025, which represented a 13% increase from the ₹19.5 crore average recorded in 2024. IBM attributes this steady escalation to the growing complexity of modern cyberattacks and significant gaps in how organizations manage access controls and AI governance.

The Digitalization Trap

India has experienced a consistent climb in data breach expenses since 2020, with a 39% increase observed between 2020 and 2024. This trajectory reflects the rapid digitalization of the Indian economy, which has expanded the attack surface for malicious actors. As enterprises migrate more critical infrastructure to the cloud and integrate complex digital workflows, they have become primary targets for sophisticated cyber-attacks.

Strategic Vulnerabilities

The record-high cost underscores a critical strategic vulnerability within Indian organizations. The lack of robust access controls and the absence of AI governance tools have left many firms unable to contain breaches effectively, leading to higher recovery costs and longer downtimes. Gaurav Agarwal, Vice President of Technology at IBM India & South Asia, noted that the absence of these controls is not merely a technical oversight but a strategic vulnerability.

As breaches become more disruptive, the financial impact now poses a significant risk to business continuity and national economic security. The cost of failure is no longer just a line item in an IT budget but a threat to the viability of the enterprises themselves.
