Microsoft adds Windows Age API to standardize safety across Windows 11

Microsoft is introducing the Windows Age API to Windows 11, enabling third-party applications and services to determine a user's age group without accessing their exact date of birth. This platform-level capability standardizes age-appropriate safeguards across the Windows ecosystem, including emerging AI tools.

The API provides non-personally identifiable age categories and verification status based on the user's Microsoft account. The system consists of three primary functions: GetUserAgeRangeAsync, which provides specific age groups; GetAgeVerificationStatusAsync, which confirms verification status; and CheckAgeStatusAsync, which classifies users as a child, minor, or adult. For developers using the age range function, Microsoft has established five distinct groupings: under 10, 10-12, 13-15, 16-17, and 18+.

Shifting to Platform-Level Safety

This rollout marks a strategic shift in how age-awareness is handled on the PC. Previously, parents and users managed safety configurations on an app-by-app basis. By tying age signals directly to the Microsoft account (MSA), the operating system provides a consistent safety layer that follows the user across different software. This reduces the administrative burden on families and ensures protections are active by default across the OS.

As part of this broader effort, Microsoft is expanding its "Microsoft Age Verification" (MAV) system. This "verify once, use everywhere" framework is already operational in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore, and is now being integrated more deeply into the Windows experience to streamline how identity is confirmed across the ecosystem.

Privacy and Compliance Implications

For the industry, this move represents a significant change in the handling of sensitive identity data. By providing age ranges rather than specific dates of birth, Microsoft balances the needs of developers—who must comply with strict regulations like GDPR and COPPA—with the privacy rights of the user.

However, this approach also centralizes age-based profiling within the Microsoft account ecosystem. By making the MSA the primary gatekeeper for age-restricted content on Windows, Microsoft positions its account system as the central authority for identity verification on the desktop.

Deployment Timeline

Microsoft stated that by making age awareness a platform capability, the company helps developers build safeguards into experiences from the start. The APIs are currently available to Windows Insiders for testing and are scheduled to be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in the near future.
