APM Terminals Elizabeth Electrifies Fleet at Port of New York and New Jersey
The terminal operator is deploying 96 electric tractors and 34 eRTG cranes to decarbonize heavy-duty logistics.
APM Terminals Elizabeth has launched a comprehensive electrification and modernization program at the Port of New York and New Jersey. The initiative marks a major shift toward zero-emission logistics for one of the region's most critical economic gateways.
As part of the rollout, the company has ordered 96 Class 8 electric terminal tractors from Orange EV and 34 electric rubber-tired gantry (eRTG) cranes from Konecranes. To support the new hardware, APM Terminals is investing in dedicated charging infrastructure and workforce training programs to ensure staff can manage the transition to green operations.
The Scale of Operations
The investment comes as APM Terminals Elizabeth manages a massive share of regional trade, handling nearly 30% of all container traffic at the Port of NY and NJ. According to industry data, the terminal supports more than 600 vessel calls and approximately 800,000 truck loads every year.
"The future of Elizabeth depends on our willingness to invest today," said Henrik Kristensen, Managing Director of APM Terminals Elizabeth. Kristensen noted that these orders are a milestone in the terminal's modernization journey, intended to strengthen infrastructure and prepare for future cargo growth.
Driving Toward Net-Zero
This transition is part of a broader sustainability push by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to achieve a net-zero future. By replacing diesel-powered heavy machinery with electric alternatives, the terminal aims to reduce local emissions and improve the overall reliability of its equipment.
Bethann Rooney, Director of the Port Department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, stated that the new electric equipment strengthens the capacity of port facilities while supporting the agency's overarching environmental goals.
Industry Implications
Decarbonizing heavy-duty port logistics is a significant technical challenge due to the power requirements of Class 8 vehicles and massive gantry cranes. By electrifying a substantial portion of its fleet, APM Terminals is setting a precedent for how other high-volume U.S. ports can modernize their infrastructure.
Beyond the environmental impact, the move highlights the necessity of workforce upskilling. The shift from internal combustion engines to electric drivetrains requires new maintenance protocols and operational workflows, making the accompanying training investment as critical as the hardware itself.
