Arbe Robotics Targets Level 4 Trucking With High-Resolution 4D Imaging Radar
The company is partnering with a European truck manufacturer to integrate its massive MIMO radar array into next-generation autonomous sensor suites.
Arbe Robotics is positioning its ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar as a foundational technology for achieving Level 4 autonomous driving. The company is specifically targeting the autonomous trucking sector, where long-range perception is critical for safety at highway speeds.
To implement this vision, Arbe is collaborating with a prominent European truck manufacturer. The partnership aims to integrate Arbe's imaging radar into next-generation sensor suites, providing the redundancy and precision required for heavy-duty autonomous freight. The hardware is built on a massive MIMO array featuring 48 transmitting and 48 receiving channels, which the company notes is the highest channel count available on the market.
The Need for 4D Perception
The autonomous driving industry is increasingly shifting its focus toward structured operational domains, such as highways, where the return on investment for autonomous trucking is more immediate than for urban robotaxis. While many systems rely on cameras and LiDAR, these sensors often struggle with extreme weather, lighting shifts, and high costs.
4D imaging radar addresses these gaps by providing high resolution in both azimuth and elevation. Unlike traditional radar, this technology allows the vehicle to distinguish between objects with greater precision while remaining operational in snow, rain, total darkness, and intense sun glare. By providing distance, velocity via Doppler, and elevation data, it creates a critical layer of redundancy that does not depend on visual clarity.
Implications for Heavy Freight
For autonomous trucks traveling at 70 to 80 mph, the stakes for perception are significantly higher than for passenger cars. Heavy trucks require substantially longer braking distances, meaning the sensor suite must detect obstacles hundreds of meters ahead to ensure a safe stop.
"Accurate long-range detection and object separation are imperative features for autonomous trucks to drive safely at highway speeds," said Kobi Marenko, CEO of Arbe Robotics. By offering long-range capabilities that exceed 300 meters, Arbe's technology aims to remove one of the primary technical barriers to "eyes-off" highway driving and the commercial scaling of Level 4 freight.

As the industry moves toward commercialization, the focus remains on verifying these systems in real-world environments. While the hardware specifications are established, the next phase involves the deep integration of this radar data into the decision-making software of truck OEMs.
