Audi has launched production of the A2 e-tron at its Ingolstadt plant, marking a strategic pivot toward extreme production efficiency. The compact electric vehicle is the centerpiece of a broader effort to maintain German industrial competitiveness through digitalization.

The company reduced the vehicle's development time by 21 months compared to previous comparable projects. According to Audi, this acceleration was achieved by streamlining internal processes and increasing automation rather than expanding headcount. The A2 e-tron is positioned as the brand's most efficient series-production model to date, recording an energy consumption of 12.8 kWh/100 km under WLTP standards. In the German market, the vehicle carries a starting price of EUR 38,200.

A Digital Shift in Manufacturing

A key driver of the efficiency gain was the implementation of "Edge Cloud 4 Production," an industrial cloud system designed to streamline assembly. By utilizing this cloud infrastructure, Audi replaced traditional industrial PCs, reducing hardware complexity on the factory floor and allowing for more agile updates to the production line.

CEO Gernot Döllner stated that the A2 e-tron represents the next step in the company's renewal, demonstrating how Audi is implementing its transformation by developing faster and producing more efficiently to strengthen industrial value creation in Germany. This shift is part of a wider strategic move to make production leaner and more digital to better compete within the European EV market.
