Audi revives A2 nameplate with ultra-efficient e-tron compact crossover

Audi is bringing back the A2 nameplate for a new all-electric compact crossover scheduled for release at the end of 2026. The vehicle marks a strategic pivot for the German automaker as it seeks to capture the entry-level electric vehicle market with a focus on technical innovation and extreme energy efficiency.
Produced in Ingolstadt, Germany, the A2 e-tron will be available with three battery configurations: 52 kWh, 61 kWh, and 84 kWh. The top-tier 84 kWh battery delivers a maximum range of 401 miles (approximately 645-646 km) based on the WLTP cycle. Audi claims the vehicle is the most efficient production model in the company's history, achieving energy consumption as low as 12.8 kWh per 100 km.
A legacy of efficiency
The revival draws inspiration from the original Audi A2 produced between 1999 and 2005. While the first iteration was a pioneering aluminum-bodied hatchback praised for its aerodynamics but hindered by high manufacturing costs, the 2027 version adapts to modern market demands. The new model utilizes the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, shifting the form factor to a compact crossover while maintaining the brand's commitment to low-drag design.

This launch represents Audi's most aggressive move yet into the affordable EV segment. With a starting price of approximately £32,200, the A2 e-tron is positioned to compete directly with established rivals such as the Volvo EX30 and the VW ID.3. Rather than relying solely on massive battery packs to achieve long range, Audi has prioritized aerodynamics, achieving a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.24. This approach allows the company to maximize mileage while keeping the vehicle's weight and cost lower than traditional luxury EVs.
