ÖBB Postbus Deploys Austria's First Fully Autonomous Electric Bus

ÖBB Postbus has introduced Austria's first fully automated, all-electric bus to the national transport network. The initiative integrates high-level autonomy into public transit to solve persistent connectivity gaps in rural areas and during off-peak service hours.
The vehicle is the Autonomous e-CENTRO C, a fully electric bus manufactured by the Turkish company Otokar. Operating at SAE Level 4 autonomy, the bus handles all driving tasks independently within a clearly defined operational area. Designed for accessibility and scale, the vehicle features a barrier-free low-floor entry with a wheelchair ramp and a total passenger capacity of up to 32 people.
Pilot Phases and Deployment
Initial pilot testing is currently underway at the European Forum Alpbach in Tyrol. During this phase, the bus operates with a safety person on board to monitor systems and ensure passenger security. Following the Alpbach trials, ÖBB Postbus will transition the vehicle into regular operation at Campus Wolfurt. In this second phase, the autonomous shuttle will serve as a critical link, connecting local businesses to the S-Bahn rail network.
The Strategy for Automated Mobility
This deployment is part of a broader effort by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and its subsidiary Postbus to explore how autonomous mobility complements existing public transport. The primary focus is the "first and last mile" problem—the difficulty of transporting passengers from their origin to a transit hub, or from a hub to their final destination, particularly in rural regions.
Mobility Minister Peter Hanke noted that automated buses can expand existing offers in areas or at times when traditional line operations are difficult to maintain. By utilizing Level 4 vehicles, the network can potentially offer more flexible, on-demand, or frequent services without the constraints of traditional driver scheduling in low-density areas.
