BYD unveils Great Seagull EV to bridge gap between budget and mid-range hatchbacks
The larger, more powerful sibling to the best-selling Seagull adds LiDAR and a 95 kW motor to capture the mid-budget market.
BYD is expanding its affordable electric vehicle portfolio with the introduction of the Great Seagull, a larger hatchback designed to capture the mid-budget market. The vehicle is scheduled to go on sale in China this year.
Revealed at the Chengdu Auto Show 2026 and documented in China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filings, the Great Seagull sits between the entry-level Seagull—known internationally as the Dolphin Mini—and the larger Dolphin. According to Zhang Zhuo, GM of BYD's Ocean network sales division, the new model represents a growth phase for the series, promising a more substantial presence on the road.
Technically, the Great Seagull is a significant step up from its predecessor. It measures 4,205 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, supported by a 2,650 mm wheelbase. Performance is similarly boosted; the vehicle is equipped with a 95 kW (127 hp) electric motor, a substantial increase over the 55 kW (75 hp) motor found in the standard Seagull.
Strategic Market Positioning
The move comes as BYD leverages the massive success of the standard Seagull, which ranked as the sixth-best-selling EV globally in the first half of 2026. By introducing a "budget-plus" option, BYD is filling a critical size and performance void in its lineup. The naming convention follows a pattern established by the company's Great Tang SUV and Great Han sedan, using the "Great" (Da) prefix to denote a larger, more premium version of an existing line.
Pushing Tech Downmarket
Beyond dimensions, the Great Seagull signals a shift in how BYD deploys advanced hardware. The vehicle features a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor as part of the DiPilot 300 assisted driving system. Integrating LiDAR into a vehicle positioned in the low-to-mid cost segment suggests that BYD is aggressively pushing high-end safety and autonomous driving features into more affordable vehicle classes to maintain its dominance over competitors.
What to Watch
While the core specifications and the 2026 China launch are confirmed, the industry is awaiting final pricing and detailed battery specifications. While LFP batteries from FinDreams are confirmed, the specific charging speeds and battery versions remain to be fully detailed in official consumer documentation. Observers will be watching to see if this model eventually follows the Seagull's path into international markets under the Dolphin branding.
