Chip Motors Debuts 'Chip' LUV With Human-Operated Remote Parking
The Miami startup targets suburban utility with a low-speed electric vehicle featuring teleoperation instead of AI autonomy.
Miami-based startup Chip Motors has unveiled "Chip," a mini electric "life utility vehicle" (LUV) designed for short-distance suburban transit. The vehicle aims to bridge the gap between traditional golf carts and full-sized electric cars by focusing on high-convenience, low-speed utility.
The Chip is classified as a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV), meaning it has a maximum top speed of 25 mph. Under current regulations, this allows the vehicle to be operated on public roads with speed limits up to 35 mph. Pricing is tiered by capacity, with an estimated MSRP of $15,000 for the 4-seat variant and $18,000 for the 6-seat model. To power these trips, Chip Motors utilizes approximately 15 kWh LFP batteries paired with in-wheel motors, claiming a range of over 100 miles per charge. For charging, the vehicle is equipped with NACS ports for Level 2 public stations but can also be plugged into standard 110V home outlets.
The Rise of the LUV
The vehicle enters a growing U.S. market for Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) and LSVs, where consumers seek efficient alternatives for school runs, grocery shopping, and beach trips. Rather than competing with mainstream EVs, Chip Motors is positioning itself against niche utility brands such as GEM and Wink Motors. By branding the vehicle as a "Life Utility Vehicle," the company emphasizes a lifestyle-centric approach to urban and suburban mobility where high-speed performance is secondary to ease of use and footprint.
Teleoperation vs. Autonomy
One of the vehicle's most distinct features is the "Chip Go" system, which allows the car to park itself or fetch its owner. While this may appear to be autonomous driving, the system relies on teleoperation. The vehicle is remotely operated by a human driver rather than an AI-driven autonomous system. This distinction is critical for the industry, as it demonstrates a pragmatic bridge between current remote-control technology and the eventual goal of full autonomy in the budget EV sector. It allows the company to offer convenience without the immense regulatory and technical hurdles of Level 4 or 5 autonomy.
Road to 2027
Chip Motors is currently accepting refundable deposits of $250 for those interested in securing a unit. However, potential buyers will have to wait several years before the vehicle hits the driveway, as deliveries are not scheduled to begin until 2027. Observers will be watching to see if the company can scale production of its in-wheel motor setup and whether the teleoperation service model remains viable as a commercial offering.
