Einride and DAF Trucks Partner for Level 4 Autonomous Electric Freight in Europe

The collaboration integrates Einride's autonomous software into DAF's electric truck platform to combat driver shortages.

Einride and DAF Trucks have launched a joint initiative to bring SAE Level 4 autonomous electric freight transportation to the European market. The partnership integrates the "Einride Driver" autonomous system into DAF's premium electric vehicle platform to enable driverless logistics.

The project focuses on achieving Level 4 autonomy, which allows vehicles to operate independently without human intervention under predefined conditions. To ensure the technology meets strict safety and regulatory standards for public road expansion, the companies are collaborating with the Dutch research institute TNO. TNO will handle safety validation, regulatory compliance, and coordination with type-approval authorities.

According to the project timeline, initial tests and the validation of key interfaces are scheduled for 2026. This will be followed by full software integration and commissioning in 2027. The initiative leverages the existing automated driving experience of PACCAR, DAF's parent company, which previously developed the North American Autonomous Vehicle Platform (AVP) program.

Addressing Logistics Crises

This move comes as the European freight sector faces systemic challenges, most notably chronic driver shortages and steadily rising operational costs. By removing the requirement for a human operator in specific corridors, the partnership seeks to stabilize supply chains and reduce the overhead associated with long-haul transport.

Beyond labor, the shift to an electric, autonomous fleet is designed to lower emissions and improve the overall sustainability of the freight ecosystem. Jeroen van den Oetelaar, DAF Trucks’ Chief Engineer and board member, stated that combining their premium truck platform with leading autonomous technology is a step toward shaping a more efficient and safer ecosystem.

A Shift Toward Vehicle-Agnostic Autonomy

Industry analysts view this collaboration as a significant shift toward "vehicle-agnostic" autonomy. Rather than a single manufacturer building a closed system, Einride is proving that a software-defined driving system can be integrated into a mass-market manufacturer's existing hardware. Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Einride, noted that the collaboration validates this approach and brings the company closer to deploying Level 4 autonomy at a commercial scale.

If successful, this model could accelerate the adoption of driverless logistics across Europe by allowing software providers to scale across different vehicle platforms. The industry will now be watching the 2026 interface tests to see if the integration can meet the rigorous safety demands of European public roads.
