Ford Pivots from All-Electric F-150 Lightning to Budget EV and EREV Tech
The automaker is replacing its flagship electric truck with a range-extending hybrid and launching a sub-$30,000 midsize pickup.
Ford has discontinued the current all-electric version of the F-150 Lightning, marking a sharp strategic pivot away from high-priced battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) toward a more flexible electrification strategy.
As part of this transition, Ford is introducing the Fathom, an affordable all-electric midsize pickup scheduled for sale in early 2027. The Fathom will start at $28,350, with an additional $1,595 delivery fee, bringing the entry price to $29,945. Built on Ford's new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, the Fathom is designed to offer more interior space than a Toyota RAV4 and will be the first vehicle to feature direct Apple Maps integration into its navigation system.
A Shift in Strategy
This pivot follows a period where sales expectations for the F-150 Lightning failed to materialize. CEO Jim Farley noted that the market for high-end EVs—specifically those priced between $50,000 and $80,000—was not performing as predicted, stating that the very high-end models simply were not selling.
To address these cost barriers and persistent range anxiety, Ford is replacing the full-size Lightning with an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) powertrain. Unlike a pure BEV, the EREV utilizes a gas generator to extend its reach. Farley described the EREV as a better solution, noting that it can provide over 700 miles of total range on a tank of gas while remaining all-electric for the majority of driving time.
Market Implications
Ford's retreat from an "all-in" BEV strategy for full-size trucks signals a broader acknowledgment that American truck buyers are hesitant to adopt expensive, pure-electric alternatives for heavy-duty use. By splitting its approach, Ford is attempting to capture two distinct segments: the budget-conscious urban driver via the sub-$30,000 Fathom and the traditional long-haul buyer via the EREV Lightning.
This move reflects a growing industry trend toward hybrid-electric compromises that bridge the gap between internal combustion and full electrification. By leveraging the UEV platform for smaller vehicles and range-extenders for larger ones, Ford aims to reduce the financial risk associated with the slow adoption of high-cost electric pickups.
