Ontario International Airport to Invest $5.53 Million in Electric Ground Equipment
A new FAA grant will fund zero-emission infrastructure and electric support vehicles for Terminals 2 and 4.
Ontario International Airport (ONT) is expanding its zero-emission ground operations following a multi-million dollar federal investment. The move marks a significant step in the airport's effort to decarbonize its tarmac operations and reduce local air pollution.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded the airport a $4,147,752 grant through the Voluntary Airport Low Emissions (VALE) program. With a 25% cost match provided by the airport, the total investment will reach $5.53 million. These funds are earmarked for the purchase of electric ground support equipment (GSE) and the expansion of necessary zero-emission infrastructure specifically for Terminals 2 and 4.
A Pattern of Sustainability
This award is not an isolated event but part of a sustained transition. This is the third VALE grant the facility has received in three years. The VALE program is specifically designed to help airports meet air-quality goals and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil-fuel-powered machinery with cleaner alternatives.
Ground support equipment—which includes aircraft tugs and baggage handlers—are primary targets for electrification. Because these vehicles typically operate at limited speeds and travel short distances while moving heavy loads, they are considered ideal candidates for battery-electric power.

Atif Elkadi, CEO of the Ontario International Airport Authority, described the FAA investment as a "tremendous vote of confidence" in the airport's sustainability initiatives. The transition is critical as the aviation industry faces mounting pressure to lower its carbon footprint, having historically been a major contributor to global warming.
Beyond the environmental impact, shifting ground operations to electric power offers tangible operational benefits. Electrification reduces the airport's reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets and lowers long-term operating costs. Furthermore, removing diesel engines from the ramp improves the immediate air quality for ground crews and passengers alike.
