Portuguese EV Firm i-charging Secures US Market Entry With Safety Certification

Portuguese EV charging specialist i-charging has cleared a critical regulatory hurdle to bring its high-power infrastructure to the United States and Canada. The company announced that its blueberry line of fast chargers has received ETL certification via Intertek, a mandatory North American safety standard for electrical equipment.

This certification removes the primary legal and safety barrier for the company to deploy its technology across the continent. By meeting these rigorous standards, i-charging can now integrate its systems into the growing North American electric fleet sector. Pedro Moreira da Silva, CEO of i-charging, stated that the move allows the company to contribute to the construction of charging infrastructures in the USA and Canada while establishing Portuguese technology as a reference in the market. Victor Saltão, CEO of i-charging USA, added that the certification allows the firm to enter the market and "be part of this difference."

Scaling for Heavy-Duty Transport

Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Porto and Atlanta, i-charging focuses on the specific needs of heavy-duty EV fleets. Unlike passenger vehicles, long-haul electric trucks require significantly higher power outputs to maintain operational efficiency. To address this, the company has developed the MAX charging platform, which integrates SOLUM's EV Power Module technology. The MAX platform is capable of scaling up to 1.6 MW and can serve as many as eight vehicles simultaneously through the use of dynamic power allocation.

The Impact of Megawatt Charging

The transition to electric long-haul trucking depends heavily on the viability of Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS). For fleet operators, the primary challenge is downtime; traditional fast chargers are insufficient for the massive battery packs found in Class 8 trucks. Megawatt-scale charging drastically reduces the time vehicles spend idle, making electric trucking a more competitive alternative to diesel. By entering the US market, i-charging is positioned to support government-led EV adoption programs and the broader push for decarbonized logistics.

Future Outlook

With the blueberry line now certified, the company is poised to scale its presence in the North American market. Industry observers will be watching for the deployment of the 1.6 MW MAX platform and how its dynamic power allocation performs in real-world fleet environments.
