Private Investors Propose $2.25 Billion Electric Express Train to O’Hare

A group of private investors has unveiled plans for the O’Hare Flyer, a fully electric, non-stop express train designed to link downtown Chicago with O’Hare International Airport. The project seeks to drastically reduce travel time to just 15 minutes, offering a high-speed alternative to existing transit options.

The proposed service would run from a converted station near Chicago’s old main post office directly to O’Hare’s Terminal 2. To achieve the rapid transit time, the project will utilize existing freight tracks owned by Canadian National (CN), Union Pacific (UP), and CSX. The venture is estimated to cost $2.25 billion and will be primarily privately funded, though reports indicate a reliance on debt financing. Once operational, the battery-powered trains are planned to depart every 15 minutes on the quarter hour.

A Premium Transit Alternative

Chicago currently relies on the CTA Blue Line for rail access to the airport. While the Blue Line is an affordable option at $2.50, it is significantly slower due to numerous stops. The O’Hare Flyer is positioned as a premium service targeting business and luxury travelers who prioritize speed and predictability. While exact fares have not been finalized, the cost is expected to exceed that of the Blue Line while remaining lower than typical rideshare services, which often cost more than $50.

This proposal follows several previous attempts to modernize airport access, including a high-profile but failed underground tunnel project proposed by the Boring Company. Unlike those efforts, the O’Hare Flyer group emphasizes its private funding model and its strategy of repurposing underused infrastructure. Mark Walbrun, Founder and Chief Engineering Officer, stated that by combining three existing freight rights-of-way into a dedicated service, the group intends to create one of the best airport transportation experiences in the world.

Industry Implications

If completed, the O’Hare Flyer would be the first dedicated airport express train in the United States. Such a system could significantly alleviate congestion on the Kennedy Expressway and enhance Chicago's standing as a global hub for tourism and conventions. Dave Lundy, CEO of O’Hare Flyer LLC, noted that the group intends to execute the project decisively, contrasting their approach with developers who announce plans without a clear path to completion.

The Road to 2030

The project is slated to be operational by 2030. However, several milestones remain. While the group has outlined its route and funding strategy, the project's success depends on the continued cooperation of the three major freight rail owners. Observers will be watching for formal agreements and the finalization of the train's technical specifications as the project moves toward its construction phase.
