Rivian 2027 R1 Updates Add Captain's Chairs Amid Steep Price Hikes
The EV maker simplifies its trim structure and adds family-friendly seating, but raises entry prices by up to $9,000.
Rivian has launched the 2027 model year for its R1S SUV and R1T pickup, introducing highly requested interior changes and a streamlined branding strategy. The update signals a clear shift in how the company positions its flagship vehicles as it prepares for a broader market expansion.
The most significant addition is the introduction of a six-seat layout for the R1S, featuring second-row captain's chairs and a center pass-through to the third row. This specific configuration has been the most-requested feature from owners since the R1S first launched. For the R1T, the update includes a new standard 20-inch Adventure All-Season wheel paired with Goodyear tires, designed to improve off-road traction without causing significant losses in driving range.
A Shift Toward Premium Positioning
Beyond hardware updates, Rivian is overhauling its trim nomenclature to align with the upcoming R2 lineup. The company has moved away from naming trims based on motor count—previously Dual, Tri, and Quad—and has instead adopted a simplified structure consisting of Premium, Performance, and Quad. This rebranding coincides with a new 'Esker Silver' paint option, further refining the aesthetic of the high-end line.
However, these updates come with a substantial increase in cost. The starting price for the R1S has risen to $83,990, up from the previous $76,990. The R1T has seen an even steeper jump, with its entry price climbing from $70,990 to $79,990. These increases represent a price hike of $7,000 to $9,000 depending on the model.
Market Implications and Strategy
This pricing strategy reflects Rivian's broader transition to differentiate the R1 series as a high-end, luxury offering. By pushing the R1 models further upmarket, the company creates a distinct gap between its flagship vehicles and the more affordable, volume-market R2. While the addition of captain's chairs closes a competitive gap in the luxury electric SUV segment and makes the R1S more attractive to families, the aggressive price increases may test buyer loyalty.
What to Watch
Industry analysts will now be watching to see if the enhanced features and premium branding are enough to sustain demand despite the higher entry costs. As Rivian continues to pivot its product strategy, the success of the 2027 R1 series will serve as a bellwether for whether the brand can maintain its luxury status while simultaneously scaling for the mass market with the R2.
