South Africa debuts first purpose-built electric 4x4 safari vehicle

Thula Solutions and Brandt BRV have developed a bespoke electric vehicle designed to eliminate noise and emissions in wildlife habitats.

South African firm Thula Solutions has launched the Thula ESV, the first purpose-built electric 4x4 safari vehicle manufactured in South Africa. The vehicle aims to replace traditional combustion-engine game drive vehicles to reduce the environmental impact of eco-tourism.

Developed in partnership with Bloemfontein-based builder Brandt BRV, the Thula ESV is a bespoke product engineered from the ground up. Unlike many electric conversions that rely on repurposed diesel chassis, this vehicle was designed specifically for the demands of the African bush. Technical specifications include a 65 kWh battery providing an estimated range of approximately 200 km. To handle rugged terrain, the ESV is equipped with all-wheel drive, independent suspension, and regenerative braking, while its design ensures a low center of gravity for increased stability during off-road maneuvers.

The push for sustainable tourism

Founded in 2017, Thula Solutions has focused on creating sustainable infrastructure for wilderness environments. The development of the ESV addresses a long-standing conflict in wildlife management: the reliance on petrol and diesel vehicles that produce significant noise and air pollution. These traditional vehicles often disturb animal behavior and degrade the air quality of sensitive protected areas, limiting the ability of researchers and tourists to observe wildlife in a natural state.

Impact on wildlife and industry

The transition to electric propulsion allows tourists, scientists, and park workers to get closer to animals without the intrusive roar of an internal combustion engine. By eliminating tailpipe emissions and drastically reducing acoustic pollution, the ESV minimizes the stress placed on wildlife in their natural habitats. Beyond the ecological benefits, the project marks a milestone for South Africa's industrial sector. By designing and manufacturing a specialized EV locally, the partnership demonstrates the country's growing capability to compete in high-value, niche electric vehicle markets.

Future outlook

As the Thula ESV enters the market, the industry will be watching how the 200 km range holds up under the heavy loads and extreme temperatures typical of safari operations. While the vehicle represents a significant leap in sustainable tourism, the broader adoption of electric fleets in national parks will depend on the rollout of supporting charging infrastructure in remote regions. It remains to be seen how other regional operators will respond to this shift toward purpose-built electric platforms over traditional conversions.
