Volkswagen expands electric fleet with long-wheelbase ID. Buzz Cargo

Volkswagen is expanding its electric commercial vehicle lineup with the introduction of a long-wheelbase (LWB) version of the ID. Buzz Cargo. This strategic move provides business operators with increased utility and range as competition intensifies in the electric logistics sector.
The LWB variant measures approximately 5,000 mm in length, making it roughly 300 mm longer than the standard short-wheelbase (SWB) model. This extension increases the maximum load length to 2,405 mm, up from 2,208 mm in the SWB version. This physical growth translates directly into utility, with cargo capacity rising to 4.4 cubic meters, compared to the 3.9 cubic meters available in the shorter model.
Scaling for Commercial Demand
The ID. Buzz is Volkswagen's modern, electric reimagining of the classic Microbus. While passenger-focused versions of the vehicle already offered long-wheelbase options, the Cargo variant was previously limited to the shorter chassis. The decision to expand the commercial range comes as the market for electric vans grows and competitors introduce larger, modular platforms. Specifically, the move responds to upcoming rivals such as Kia's PV7, which targets the same business fleet demographic.
Performance and Range Upgrades
Beyond the increased dimensions, Volkswagen has upgraded the powertrain to handle the larger frame and the demands of commercial use. The LWB variant is equipped with a larger 86 kWh battery, which provides an expected WLTP range of approximately 300 miles. This is a notable increase over the standard version's 79 kWh battery and 277-mile range.
Power output has also seen a significant boost. The 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system in the LWB model delivers up to 250 kW (335 hp), a jump from the 210 kW (281 hp) found in the standard SWB version. These improvements in energy capacity and raw power address common pain points for fleet managers who require higher efficiency and capability for urban and regional logistics.
Market Implications
For commercial operators, the increase in interior volume and load length can be critical. The jump to 4.4 cubic meters may allow businesses to fit specific equipment or larger parcels that would otherwise require a move to a larger, more expensive vehicle class. By bridging the gap between a compact city van and a full-sized commercial vehicle, Volkswagen is positioning the ID. Buzz Cargo to capture a wider slice of the corporate fleet market.
Industry observers will now be watching how the LWB variant performs against the emerging modular platforms from Asian manufacturers.
